Its cool to be a teen mum in the UK

They probably have not enough kids, give them a few more years and three more kids and they will be wearing rolex on each finger :o

I have a group of 3 friends, all my age (23) with gf's of 17 - 19 and they have 2 kids each :S

They all work, but 2 of the friends gf vow never to work due to them getting more money than the lads working! + they get x% of the house rent paid. I was outraged at this as me and the gf trying to move in together simply cannot afford it, where the 2 who dont work are living in nice new houses, big tv's, new computers the lot.

No wonder the UK is in the state it is!

The under 16 figure is kind of worrying, 18 and above I don't see the big issue with a girl having kids but under 16 is just wrong.

They know they'll be provided for by the taxpayer. And if that's not enough and they do a crap job of dragging the child up then again the taxpayer will be there to pick up the pieces.

Stop paying people to breed and the problem will reduce, surely?

Not sure if it is even that, I doubt a 14 year old would think like that. Like Evangelion says people in Europe under their social responsibilities better.

I'm actually debating this evening that we should not lower the age of consent.

I don't particuarly like asking OCUK for such things, but I have been given the task of using 'underage pregnancy' for my reasoning. I would much prefer to be use child abuse, but that is the way things have worked out.

So, if anyone would like to help and since the topic is already at hand, can anyone give any reasons when the age of consent shouldn't be lowered in relation to pregnant teenagers? It is quite a tough argument when you consider Holland's record....

Sorry Nitefly, I'd probably argue the opposite! While people in this country choose to remain uptight about sexual education for youngsters, and sex under 16 is still seen as 'naughty' and hence hushed-up, it's gonna be (seen to be) a problem.

BTW did anyone notice the sentence in the article stating that teen pregnancies have gone /down/ over the past ten years? It's only this year it's gone up a bit. That sounds like good progress to me.

The argument against that is that we can stop being uptight about sex without lowering the age of consent.

Why does it matter? It's just an arbitary limit anyway. What's happening goes deeper then legality.
It matters because I'm in a competition, thats why :D

No, I mean changing the age of consent won't alter the reality without addressing the other issues first. ;)

Can society keep handing out money and homes to 16 year olds with children, lets face its crap areas and council estates that have high teenage pregnancy.

Plus most of these girls wont be going to school so how can sex education be working or failing, they probably go to school 1 day a week.

A girl got prergnant in my year at school and she was is the bottom class for everything and got pregnant in 4th year.

This may sound a bit harsh but IMO if people have a more than 1 kid without being able to fully support it themselves and relying on the taxpayer to pay for them then the kids should be taken into care as the parents are obviously too irresponsible to know right from wrong.

So punish the young child for its parents mistakes?

Listening to that link is shocking, "i hate being a mum, I wish I hadn't had a child"

But the mother of the girl pregnant had her first child at 16 and her mother had her at 15, surely you would do everything in your power to teach and tell your child to not have sex and at least use protection. 3 generations all pregnant at the age of 16.

In some cases it would actually be in the child's interest though. If someone is trying to raise a childe who is infact still a child themselves -- as we're beginning to see -- it will only cause developmental problems and issues later in life. If the adults of the original child can't even stop their own from becoming a parent, then they aren't exactly what I would deem as 'good' parents and thus they will probably fail their new grandchild. Therefore in this instance, such a child should probably be put up for adoption which would infact be in its best interest and indeed, those around them.

I think that makes sense. :p

I totally agree, but I think it is entirely dependant on each individual scenario.

I was listening to something on the radio about teenage preggers last night. Apparently the height of teenage pregnancies was in the 50s, and has been dropping down since then and has now levelled out. This is nothing new. In fact you might even call it normal.
