...and in the process took out a USB 4-port hub, and (worst) 2 ports on my P6T-D motherboard. Don't care about the hub but p*ssed at damaging my MB

sorry to hear that and I was just considereding buying an icy box myself, hmmm
is it a PS2 connection to the unit?

Something like the old PS2 connector, 6 pins, 2x5V and 2x12V plus signal ground and shield ground. I just moved the thing a couple inches whilst powered up, that pulled the power cable out and it must have shorted somehow. It's A/C adapter is dead too so no use as a spare.

Not uncommon. I've had a couple of caddy PSU's die on me before. Cheap Chinese crap I'm afraid...

Bought an IcyBox to replace my previous caddy and the damn thing came with exactly the same PSU!

After a quick search I found you can buy spare PSU's for the IcyBox - not cheap at £12.50inc but maybe better built than the original. Can't give the link because of rules etc., but easy enough to find.

Are you sure the problem isn't with the actual connector on the IcyBox? My WD USB and Lacie NAS external drives have this type of connector and it would be very difficult to short any of the pins simply by pulling on the cable.

Also have you checked the PSU with a voltmeter to confirm that it's dead?

Oh it's dead all right, I got 2 other IcyBox caddys to test it with. The plug fuse on the PSU had also blown suggesting a short in the output somewhere, likely 12V line, and there isn't much by way of circuit protection in these cheap Chinese PSUs so the output trannys went. The HD survived OK but the 4-port hub and ports on the MB did not. I cut the 6-pin power lead off the PSU and soldered a molex on the other end so it can be used if powered direct from the PC.

Anyone able to advise what voltage the PSU is on a IcyBox IB-318stUS2-B - its a fairly standard connector on this model but wasnt sure what the voltage and ampage of the PSU is and cannot find my original PSU. Dont wanna plug the wrong one in!!!

Thanks guys

EDIT: Google seems to show 12V and either 2a or 3a

I have a IcyBox IB-318stU3-B USB 3.0 of course. The PSU has the following:

Model:ADS-24S-12 1224GPB
Input:100-240V ~50/60Hz Max 0.7A
Output:12V @ 2.0A

I'm now feeling bad cos I just got a IcyBox a few days ago. :(

Edit:My PSU is not like the PS2 connection type.

I remember reading about someone who opened a dead one of these up, basically there's nothing in the way of protection like you'd find on a decent PC's PSU. I'm not even sure if there's a well made brand.
