is Virgin Media having issues?

Hi all thought i would have a go on me laptop as ive been away from the net for a few days due to that sickness bug going around and me internet keeps freezing and not loading pages or just takes ages any one else getting this?.

im in oxford.

Had the same problems myself just recently, but I'm on BT. Strange.

Probably just a coincidence though; seems alright now.

Virgin Media is a lot less tempermental if you use the OpenDNS servers.

208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.

ok what do i do with these numbers? put em in me router settings or lappy and pc etc

I'm just south of Oxford on Virgin (formally NTL bit of the network) and it's all good here.
Actually I'm getting great speeds at the moment.

Poke about your router and find the options for "Static DNS". Bung em in there on lines one and two. Stick one of Virgin Media's DNS addresses on line 3 if you have it. They are 194.168.8.100
& 194.168.4.100 (for the ex-NTL areas anyway)

I use these numbers, whats the difference between these and the "open" ones you provided?

DNS servers are like....err...internet telephone books!

If you type for example "http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/" your browser will have to ask a nameserver what the IP of that address is.

Basically they tell your browser/whatever where to go to find things. (unless I've got that vastly wrong).

Virgin Medias DNS servers tend to be online and offline a lot, at least for me anyway.

Offline or otherwise unreachable a lot less often.

My house (students) had problems about a month ago but it's fine now. Healthy 4MB/s download. One song a second. Woop!
