160kg Woman Forced to pay for second Seat

OK, if you want to be pedantic:

"deliberately large as a result of <insert food items/sporting activity of your choice here>" - be that Creatin/Pies/Chocolate/whatever.

Better?

At over 18st I definitely took up more than one train seat. I couldn't play 5-a-side to start with, I had to start with just walking, which I did for 6 months until I was down to about 14st (most dramatic loss occurs early on), then I started playing 10 mins of 5-a-side a day to shed the other 3 stone.

The morbidly obese who cannot move, possibly should not be flying - if you are too fat to walk then you have far more worrying concerns than being charged for two seats on an airplane...you should consider some sort of surgery stomach-bypass effort, imo.

She managed to get to the airport, she could walk [it doesn't mention she's wheelchair bound], therefore she CAN exercise, she CAN eat less calories, she CAN get thinner. The End.

Its quite clear you only care about 'winning' this rather than having an actual discussion...What is this 'the end' rubbish..

As someone who was previously obese, i would have thought you would welcome discussion on the issue..I guess not.

Whether it's her fault that she's fat or not, is hardly relevent. If she's bigger than 1 seat, she should pay for it, simple as that.

If things keep goin the way they are, people who take up more than 1 seat will be the majority...airlines need to make bigger seats.

Yup, carry on ignoring the points raised/made!

:)

I welcome no discussion, because there's nothing to discuss. It's caused by what I said, and cured by what I said. Apart from a very few VERY rare medical conditions (you're more likely to win the lottery), strangely none of which seems to have affected other cultures in the same as the west - with its propensity for over indulgence...and the same propensity to find something or someone to blame for their own problems apart from their OWN failure to get a ******* grip on themselves and their lives.

I'm angered, yes, because giving them an *excuse* for being fat isn't actually going to help them resolve their issues, it'll just make them more likely to accept the fact that they "just are fat".

Perhaps if more companies started discriminating against fat people there'd be a lot less of them. Perhaps McDs should start charging people by how much they weigh...win/win.

I don't think airlines should make bigger seats just for the hugely obese, and it's unlikely there will be more morbidly obese people than average weight people in the next 10 years. Being that obese is caused by complete over indulgence and the price of two seats should be the least of her worries.

You need to stop talking in such definitive language. Not everyone is the same as you. Not everyone works the same as you.

There are huge psychological issues involved.

Ive never claimed the excuses are valid in all cases. They are pretty much always nothing more than feeble excuses...all i am saying is that its not as simple as calories in < calories out = weightloss. There are barriers...and yes, laziness and lack of willpower are some of those.

Its not just the hugely obese though...That 18st3 dude said that he spreads into a second train seat...and plane seats are smaller than train seats afaik...

18st3 isnt hugely obese..its not far off the average in the US i reckon...give it a few more years...

Everyone has roughly the same body - are you now saying that some people, if they ate fewer calories and exercised more would somehow GAIN weight?

Of course not, only an idiot would think that.

The train seats I mention are approximately the same size as standard seats in a commercial jet such as the 747, which is the last commercial jet I flew on at over 18st, and yes I did spill over into another seat, but thankfully it was empty. If they'd have charged me for 2 seats I'd have been upset, yes, but only at myself - no-one else, I'd certainly not consider contacting the media with my weight problems.

I think the next move is to increase the price of clothing as it goes up in size. Anything over size 16 for women would incur a £100 fat-fine. That'd put a stop to all the "I'm just big boned" nonsense pretty quickly.

Of course not, only an idiot would think that.

Are you implying that everyone has the same metabolism? Are you suggesting that hormones dont play a part? Are you suggesting that men with low testosterone are not prone to gaining fat and have a hard time gaining muscle? No, because only an idiot would say think that.

I am not saying that...Only an idiot would think ive been saying such a thing. ;)

but people are different and lose/gain weight and deal with calories in different ways.

She got mucked around by the airline...I would also have no problem being charged if i took up too seats...but you can be damn sure I would want the extra seat next to me...Otherwise, as in this situation, its just the airline grabbing money and nothing to do with passenger inconvenience.

He weighs less than the woman in the pic...scary isnt it..Muscle is big..Thats why its so cool.

To be clear, if you need more than one seat then you should pay for more than one seat. If you require the space of two seats because you can't keep your nose out of the fridge or you're a body builder or you have a medical condition, it does not matter. The reason does not change the fact that you have a requirement.

Your requirement is either for one seat or more than 1 seat. You should pay for one or more seats dependant on this.

Then ive no problem with that at all...As long as its as straight cut as that, without bias.

Need two seats, pay for 2 seats...Once you start basing it on WHY they need 2 seats, it gets silly.

Muscle is 2.7 times as dense as fat, a person with big muscles the same weight as a fat person will take up much less space, and their muscles don't flop over the side of the seat.

Its also in different places...their stomach may not flop over the side, but their shoulders will push their head into the wall of the plane.
