XFX 4870X2 Squeals Like A Pig...

For me it comes from the graphics card. I have a coolermaster 850W which is more than enough! Of course, it is possible that if you are straining the PSU it would do that also.
 
I've tried it on two 1000w PSU's and it squeals on both. 1000w is overkill for my card. The noise is unbearable and I refuse to except that it’s ‘normal’ when others who have the same exact card as me are experiencing no noise whatsoever. It’s just that some of us choose to do something about it.

yours must be much louder than mine then.

i kept the fan at 40% when i was on airr and couldnt hear the squeal then my pc was also under the desk.

now it is on top of my desk and just to my right.

Im happy with the cards performance and never goes above 36 degrees on water so i choose to live with a bit of noise during loading.
 
The 280 I purchased from overclockers in the £218 sale squealed like crazy when I first installed it but got a lot quieter after a couple of weeks use, my old 7900 was the same.

I wouldn’t mind too much if it was just squealing during loading but it's constant during game play which is so off putting. I know I'm gaming and shouldn’t focus on it but I do because it's just ridiculously loud. Good temp on your card.

I got a 280 when ocuk were selling them cheap a few weeks back...had a 650w PSU in, with low amps on the 12v rail.. anyway, tried the card, worked fine, but did squeal during loading /menus.

Bought a new coolermaster PSU, 750 modular...squeals SO loud in games, not just loading now.. was so bad i RMA'd the PSU, same problem with replacement, went to OCUK and was told it was sorted, got it home to find it wasnt. RMA'd the graphics card, ended up getting send a 285..

The 285 still squealed too...so, in the end, i just put the older, less powerful PSU in my main system, no more squealing!. Shame..just wasted 80 quid on a psu!

I did some reading and found out that the squealing is a result of too many amps going down the 12v rails.. not sure how true this is, but i can believe it, seeing as it doesnt squeal with a less powerful PSU.

Well PSU is a Corsair HX1000 but I tried the Card on a 650w PSU and still had same squeal.

N19h7m4r3 what PSU you got as you don't get any squealing?

The Corsair is about as good as it gets. I've had problems on a 850w Zalman and 1200W Thermaltake and still on the Corsair.
 
i run an enermax Galaxy 1000w

i also have an enermax liberty 620w il try it on that see if it makes any difference.
 
I have had this with most high end graphics cards in the past few years. Most noticable is duting the intro videos to crysis and during the loading of 3dmark. It's normal to an extent, and I don't think it means the card is dying or anything.

Ah, no, legally they can't charge a restocking fee if something is sent back under the DSR, as the DRS is a legal requirement for any businesses operating.

So I think it would be illegal for them to try and charge a restocking fee if you sent it back under the DSR.
 
Just to update:

I took it back under the DSR and had a refund. I then purchased the Sapphire 4870x2 and it's as quiet as a mouse.:D It also runs 8 degrees cooler than the xfx version on stock, (well mine does anyway).

Just want to say a big thank you to Overclockers for their support and understanding.

Ive had my Diamond 4870x2 since Oct now and no squealing at all...at worst sounds like the fan has gone into turbo mode for a few seconds, but most of the time time my raptors are making more noise than it is!
