Cars which just couldn't be improved by modding

Pedants. :p

I actually agree with all the cars listed in the OP. Will try and think of some others later.

EDIT: Actually Jag E-Type?

The Ultimate hyper cars where the only way to improve them would be to crucify them, such as McLaren F1, Pagani Zonda F, even the Bugatti Veyron which could do with some weight reduction but would take away from the essence of the car. All cars can be improved but depends what you want to do to improve them.

I take it you haven't read Flemke's thread on Pistonheads and the work he has done on his F1.

Don't wrap it, I'll take it. 380Bhp from a 1970's 5.3 v8, stunning looks and a true British supercar.

Aerial Atom 300

Don't think there's anything you can mod on it really!
you were saying (shows off the 'kit' better than black version)
atomv8.jpg

not saying its to everyones taste but obviously someone thought they could make it better. Its not the best picture but theres an all black version that actually looks pretty slick.

As to cars that should stay stock - lets see (can't be bothered to go hunting for images though)
bugatti eb220

damn this harder than you think

Ok ignoring any mechanical changes (ie engine suspension etc) and wheels.
I'll add
vw golf mk1 gti
vw golf mk2 rallye
skyline r32
bigfoot :)

Bugatti Type 57C Gangloff Aravis & a droptop version (If you've got a spare £5 mill, like that lucky **** that found one in his garage :o)

The original Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

EDIT: Posted before I realised I don't have a pic. Sorry! You all know what I mean though.

Ferrari P3/P4

Miura SV

Aston DBR1

Porsche 917

BMW E46 CSL (Not seen a better looking M3)

IROC 911

the ferrari came ready modified as it is a P3 chassis with a p4 body

and the 917 only really became famaous after they had the tails chopped off to sort out the aero.

It's hard to find a picture of a real one but a 427 Cobra in original trim takes some beating:

427Cobra1.jpg

In fact, have another picture of one:

427Cobra2.jpg

The Cobra is a modified AC Ace, and even Carol Shelby says it's the most evil handling car ever made. Having driven an original Shelby Cobra and a modern copy with a tuned Mustag engine, the modern 'copy' is FAR superior.

The original has 5 reverse gears. 1 that it's meant to have and 4 accidental reverse speeds. Just engage any forward gear and turn the steering wheel under full power to enjoy the thrill of going backwards. Oh, and the brakes are poo too.

its a given that most super cars do not need modification as they are made to be pure drivers cars and classics shouldnt be as you will ruin the heritige and its also a bit pointless as not many people are likely to mod a classic 50's ferrari/jaguar etc.

i feel it would be best to focus on the lower end, such as below:

106 Raylle
Intergra Type R
Civic Type R EK9
Honda NSX
Mercedes 500SEC - look awfull with different wheels on
Merceded SL (the 90's one) look dreadfull modified

Every single car on this thread will have evolved, I sense you missed the entire point of the thread. I am more than aware of the history of both cars and the 917 did not become famous after its tail was 'chopped off', it simply became less infamous after John Wolfe lost his life at Le Mans in 69. If you intend to share knowledge I urge you to start from a standpoint of having it in the first place...

The 917's fame is mostly due the fact that it brought Porsche it's first win at Le Mans, the death of John Wolfe and the general lack of drivability comapred to the olde 908 of the pre kurzcheck cars has added to the myth but ultimately if it hadnt have gone on to become a winner if would have been forgotten by now.

the p3/p4 is also similar in that the P3 was not a sucess on the track and hence the car was partially upgraded to P4 spec. as many of the P4s were to 350 CanAm spec when they became ineligible for Le Mans.

The point of this thread is to discuss cars that could not be improved by modification, both of the above cars almost certainly could not be improved by just anyone sticking a pile of go faster parts on them, but as they are both pure race cars and knowledge has moved on huge amounts in the last 35-40 years since these cars were new they both could easily be modified by someone with update knowledge of modern engineering principles.

they may not look as pretty afterwards but as racecars looks were never high up the priority list.
