For those who are religious

Why do you believe in your religion? Cos ive i dont believe in god and their is one im royally screwed.

Why would you be screwed and that really is a rubbish reason and just because someone was there for you doesn't mean you have to belive what thwey do

Nope don't believe in God/Gods although my mum made me goto church but always told me when I was old enough it was a decision I had to make, dad was agnostic, in the sense that he doesn't even think about such things.

However I do think the bible is a very good reference for historical facts, that is massively over looked. Archaeologists are only starting to use it. Over exaggerated but the underlying stuff is right.

Religion enslaves intellect and makes a virtue out of not thinking.

Religion should be abolished. Everyone has a right to their own beliefs and practice of worship, but religion that is lead and compels membership should be abolished.

I'm surprised no one has posted the usual 'I'm an atheist so I'm smarter than you god fearing loons' :p

...Sikhism...
I'm Hindu, so I'd say pretty much what this guy said, except we're a bit hypocritical as we did have the caste system so didn't quite think that everyone is equal, but no one really follows that any more. Of course I like to wind up my other half (who is Sikh) and tell her that Sikhism is just a rip off of Hinduism :p

Why am I Hindu? Well yes I was raised that way, but my faith gives me strength and has taught me good rules by which to follow my life, which I suppose you could learn without religion.

One important theme that I think is fairly relevant today is that Hinduism also doesn't try to convert people to their way of thinking, and understands that there isn't a Hindu god or a Muslim god or a Christian god but just one god, no matter who and how you are praying to.

When I was a kid I did 'abandon' my religion when I was being bullied a lot, but I've come to realise that religion isn't so you can pray 'please God, stop these bullies or let me pass this exam' but to give you faith and strength so you can do things for yourself.

That all probably sounds pretty wishy-washy to an atheist :D

Brought up muslim, but not really feeling it any more.

I was standing outside college with 3 friends, 1 guy and 2 girls, when two Muslim preachers with extremely dirty, curly penis pubes on their cheeks came up to me and asked, "are you muslim". I hastily replied, "Nah mate, I'm sikh". My friend however said "yes" - boy did he regret it. They then began preaching for 15 minutes about how girls are bad, sex is sin, talking is sin, looking is sin, if you accidentally glance at a girl don't look again or it's sin, etc. They also told him to step away from the girls otherwise he'll get double sin. And that he will go to hell if he doesn't come to their preaching session during Friday lunchtime.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I was like, Damn! These guys need a shave and a life.

Aristole said:
I have gained this by philosophy: that I do without being commanded, what others do only from fear of the law.

Civ4, discovering philosphy :)

I think that it has some meaning on life, but i have no belife in religion. For me reality is all we have, and along with Aristole's quote we have to make the most of what we have now as once we die that is it.

Bit grim but i cant handle being told otherwise. (plus as no one else seems to have mentioned it, i dont think there's a higher power) :)

Religion - A load of **** from a by gone era that somehow has positioned itself as something essential to modern life, indeed life in general.

Looking around our world, I see no sign of God.

I was brought up a christian..but after growing up and seeing a bit of life, i think ive become atheist.

In theory i dont care what other people choose to believe in..but in practice, it affects us all because a lot of religious people try to force their beliefs on others in some way or other.

If any of the older religions such as christianity or islam were introduced today, and hadnt previously been seen, people would laugh at them in much the same was as scientology. However, theyve been around for so long that lots of people believe in them simply because of the history.

Agnostic Thank God;)

The reason that most people worship in a certain way or believe through a particular religion is more than likely cultural. There are those who make a conscious choice latter on in life to follow a certain religion but I believe they are in the minority.
