For those who are religious

If someone said that a burning bush had spoken to him and told him to kill his son, what would our reaction be? Would it be a free ticket to an asylum, or would we drop to our knees and follow this guy?

Why are the stories and mystical happenings in the bible acceptable in a book, but not now in present times?

Christians are supposedly waiting for the second coming. If someone came and said "I am God", are you going to believe him? No, you're not. You'll send him to an asylum to be cared for.

Christianity today (especially anything that involves a Priest, Vicar or leader) is a load of bs. Since when did Jesus say that we need to gather in a church or follow a priest to pray or worship? In fact, Jesus supposedly said something along the lines of: "Wherever people will gather in my name, that will be my church". Why, then, are Christians compelled to go to Church or follow a priest?

Why do Catholic leaders thrust graven images in Christian's faces and ask them to worship them? This is supposedly against one of the ten commandments.

Why do Christians "eat fish on Friday"? Where in the bible does it tell you to do this? It doesn't. This rule was made up between an old Roman military leader and the Roman Catholic church of the time. They wanted a strong navy but didn't want to maintain it all year round - so they made sure there was a demand for fish by telling people to eat fish on Friday or go to hell, this more fishermen were in work.

Religion = bs. It enslaves intellect.

Hi,

My question is:

Why do you believe in your religion?

Was there an event that made you believe, Were you brought up believing, etc?

I don't intend to start a flame war / whatever, I am just curious.

Thanks

Daven

no disrespect but there have been several topics regarding this subject already. Search bible or darwin and you'll see.

Heh :D Organized religion has always been about crowd control. I reckon some of them might have started off with good intentions but knowing human beings, probably not that many. If you want to believe in something, there's nothing stopping you but when you get people like the Muslin preachers who noised up our freind and his college mates above, thats where the line needs to be drawn. Those people are fundamentalists and they are very rarely rational.

You obviously haven't been around here for long or not been paying attention if you think you can have a sensible conversation on religion on this forum :)

My religion includes.. coffee.. beer.. Wine.. computers.. skateboarding.. music.. and lack of religion.

Some may call it..Atheism.. i call it WA HALA HALA BEE WAPP BAPPA DE BOP.. SHUGGA.. SHUG. WAG. WOOOP WOOP.

Its long.. but its.. its part of my life.

I've not studied any in depth, but did have to go to a Christian high school.

I like the live and let live aspects of Sikhism and Buddhism, there's no looking down on others or pity or feeling the need to 'save' them.

Regardless of what they think of me as a person, a devout Catholic will believe that when I die, I will go to Hell or Purgatory as I don't believe in God.

I respect people's religions, as long as they respect my lack of one. ;)

Buddhism has different sects :o Some of them horribly similar to christianity :o

to avoid discrimination please put up a thread for those people who aren't religious asking why they aren't..... as your title excludes them from discussing it in this thread

RELIGION IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL IN THIS WORLD WE LIVE IN - FACT.

Its brainwashing to the maximum. There is NO GOD.

Given that such a thing never happened in the Bible, I'd say that's a fairly irrelevant question.

What sort of things do you mean? God asking people to make sacrifices? Pretty sure that still happens...

This is dealt with in the Bible. It says that many false prophets will show up, but that when Jesus himself comes back, we'll all know about it and it will be unquestionable. So far, anyone claiming to be Jesus has been wholly questionable, which is why we've put those people in asylums.

Church isn't just a building, you know. You've answered your own question really - church is anywhere that Christians meet. As for following a priest, we don't follow them as such, but we do listen when they teach from the Bible, as they generally know a lot more about it than we do.

Pass. I'm not about to apologise for Catholic icons.

Another Catholic thing, and I don't think it is quite as dramatic as "meat on Friday = hell".

And yet you're the one who appears to be intellectually lacking when it comes to religion. Ironic.

The biggest mass murderers in the 20th Century were atheist.

9/11 would not of happened if Religion didnt exist. The war in Iraq would not have happened. The trillions spent on Iraq war could have fixed this Economy down-turn.

Now-a-days people are SCARED to go anywhere in a plane in fear of terroism attacks.

These mass-murders you are talking about believed in SOMEONE they were not ATHEIST.

This country is being taken over BECAUSE OF RELIGION.

THE ENTIRE POLITICAL SYSTEM IS RAN BY IDIOTS WHO BELIEVE IN A GOD.

This whole world will end in the next 15 years. At UK Airports, 80% of Security staff are NOT english and CAN'T BE TRUSTED. They will be BRAINWASHED by the leaders which will then result in MULTIPLE hijacks in the UK.

/rant
