Graduation ceremonies

As soon as they told me it was going to cost me a load of money just to have my photo taken and feel a right fool in a gown i decided not to go, I didn't miss anything good and have never regretted it.

I, for one, am staggered that you have a degree. ;) only kidding!

EDIT: My ceremony was a bit tedious, but I'm glad I did it - it is the culmination of 4 years hard work (or 2 years in the union, and 2 years hard work, depending on how you look at it).

The only reason i'm glad I went was for the obligatory photo with me in my gown holding the piece of paper (which wasn't my degree mind, it was just a roll of paper, for the photo..).

Other than that, I sat in a stuffy hall with 1000 people with 3 hours, wearing an expensive rented gown.

Oh, and my course/name was one of the first up, so I then had to sit there for a couple of hours, whilst people I didn't know/couldn't care less about, received their degrees.

Go on the biking tour.

Wow, cheer up people. :)

I really enjoyed mine. My old classmates and I went out for a final night of fun the night together before the ceremony and it was good to see them all again. The ceremony was a little dull but it didn't go on that long (also, it was interesting to find out what grades everyone had got!). And afterwards we spent a sunny afternoon drinking Pimms. Most people only do it once so why not enjoy it?

Protip: take the photo's yourself. I saved about £120 and have the full-size RAWs so I can do whatever I want with them (including burying them on my HD so they never get printed) :p.

Sorry to be the first to say this, but how did you end up booking a holiday that clashes with your graduation date? They're published about 18 months in advance!
Can't you defer the graduation to the next ceremony?

Mine weren't published in advance afaik, I knew the month but not the actual date until a month or two after the exams and everything finished...

Just got the dates through for mine.. didn't realise you had to pay to go to your graduation! (only £30 but still....)

I'm going.. it's felt like a long 4 years and I guess graduation is the aim. Kind of the 'result' I suspose. Plus my mate is leaving the country a few days after graduating so it'll be nice after doing the same course/modules for 4 years! :p

Location:
Canterbury Cathedral

Its £40 if i want to go with guests, you get two tickets.

I guess i probably should go.

I went to mine and had a great view of one of the pillars in the cathedral, but not much else

It wasn't too bad. My parents have been to 4 graduations and apparently mine was the shortest. I think Kent split it in to more ceremonies than a lot of places...

Im entering the mega avalanche this year again, which happens to be the 3 days after my graduation.

If i wasnt away i'd go to the graduation in a heart beat, purely for the cheesy photos and for my parents.

I've got a job offer, so i think i need to graduate before i can take up the job, and the offer would have expired before the winter graduations

Its not a case, of do i not go to the ceremony, its more: do i miss a once of opportunity to go biking around europe before i start a proper job.

Seen as its likely to be the last time I will have seen a load of people from uni, and the fact mine was in a massive marque by the sea on a brilliant sunny day, im very glad I went to mine.

Silly hats and capes were not fun though

Mine bored me to death, and I had to it do it twice on consecutive days as my girlfriends was the day before mine. However it's hugely important to parents etc so I went along with it.

Have you checked the job won't accept you on the basis that you've achieved degree result X:X but haven't collected the certificate? You may also want to check whether the University would allow you to graduate at a later ceremony but send you the certificate early? There may well be a measure of discretion here if you ask.

Good luck at the Megavalanche too. :)

Graduation isn't a day for you, it's a day for your parents to be there and be proud that their son/daughter has grown up.

Indeed. But I wanted to attend mine anyway, and celebrate the end of a long journey with my coursemates.

I look forward to going to mine. An official way of saying my days of education are over, and in a good way.

My family look forward to seeing me graduate, and I look forward to making them feel proud of me. I'm not looking forward to sitting in the ceremony listen to someone talk for 2 hours.

Same here. I'll be going to mine on the 6th of July.

My dad is a photographer so I won't need to worry about getting ripped off for pics.
