P6-T memory problem

Hi all,

I recently bought a P6-T. Core i7 920 and the 6GB triple channel Corsair XMS3 1600MHz memory.

At first the computer detected 6gb, but for some reason now it's only detecting 4gb!

The memory sticks are in A1, B1, C1 (ie the orange slots).

I've tried all 3 sticks in pairs of two, and they all work, but it seems slot A1 might be the problem. I have not yet tried it with just 1 stick of RAM in slot A1.

Any thoughts/help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hmmm, the System tab in control panel doesn't detect 6gb, but CPU-Z shows 6144mb but says the system is running in dual-channel mode.

Given that I'm using all 3 orange slots, why on earth is it doing that?

1 stick of RAM in slot A1 doesn't boot. If I put a slot in B1, C1 and C2, it boots with 6gb but obviously not in triple channel! ARGH!

Any help would be v.v.v.useful...

Are you running the latest version of CPUz? If you're not sure, then please do check. Earlier versions have issues with triple-channel RAM.

On my Motherboard the black slots are marked A0, B0, C0 so I put my RAM in the black slots, which is counter-intuitive as the orange ones are closer to the CPU. I'm pretty sure I did this because I read somewhere that the Orange slots don't work unless the black ones are populated.

Is it booting ok? i had an issue with my p6-t shorting out on something :S c1 wouldnt work no matter what i tried, i took mobo out and tested on bench and it was fine put it back in case and hey presto :)

Yep, running latest version of CPU-Z. The issue is that the BIOS only recognises 4GB RAM if I use all 3 orange slots - CPU-Z recognises the 6GB but shows it in dual channel, which implies triple channel mode isn't working.. Now, I'm certain that previously it recognised all 6gb and ran in triple channel.

I've set the memory settings in the BIOS to XMP mode, so the RAM runs at the full 1600MHz speed, but this doesn't affect the full detection.

If I use C1/C2 and B1, it recognises all 6GB RAM. But surely then I don't get the benefits of triple channel? How much of a performance decrease would that be?

Also, I've heard that a CPU cooler not installed properly can cause the board to fail to recognise all the RAM. Has anyone experienced this? My Akasa Nero isn't exactly easy to install properly... (average temps in the 40s and, this morning, it wasn't seated properly so CPU got to 85 degrees! I shut down within 20-30 seconds, though...).

Cheers.

Definately worth trying to reseat the cpu and cooler

Try going into bios and picking XMP profie under the memory settings.
I had same issue as you (how painful to see 6GB reported in cpuz but 4GB in Windows eh!).
All resolved when chose correct settings.

Sorry can see you tried that.
Post the rest of your bios settings, its likely to be resolved in there.
Assuming you've resat the CPU and still cant see the 6GB RAM in triple channel?

I have this exact same with identical hardware (mobo and processor and memory) and the symptoms are exactly as you have described. What was your resolution please? Nothing is detected in slots A1 and B1, even after I purchased some more memory and used it in the black slots (tried it in orange slots as well). It now shows 8GB instead of 12GB. I am thinking mobo rma.....

hi guys, had the same poblem with mushkin ram 6 gb (detected by CPU-z but not BIOS or mobo).
tried a whole lot of things and almost lost my hair.
1. changed ram on slots
2. reset cpu
3. checked for damaed ins on mobo chip slot

In the end a BIOS flash worked. NOT an updated one cos there is non but a simple flash with existing version from asus website.
hang in there and good luck

If it's a P6T then the automatic tool does not identify the latest BIOS. The one the board shipped with was from November 2008 in most cases and there are BIOSes available from much later, but you need to download them manually.

Tried the latest bios update (there was a later one than Nov 08) but no better situation. And then to cap it all, PC turned off suddenly two days ago and now I cannot get any display. Fans start, stop, start, stop. Best I can get now is fans starting up but no blue memory light on the board and no display.
Have RMAd board.....

hi there - some sticks are incompatible

we found that ocz ram didnt like playing with the p6t at all
