so whats the fastest card at present

Girlfriend (know what one of those is?) bought it for me cleverclogs. Don't worry I will buy an Extreme version of Westmere when it is released.

I'd hate to see the lecture you gave her for not getting the 'BEST'.

Also, yes I do know what 'one of those is'. The fact that you're trying to demonstrate your maturity by telling us you have a girl friend is terrible.

Yes I have a girlfriend too going on 4 years, big deal that makes to you and anyone else on here though.

Shhhhhhh. It's over.

Well hasn't the last few pages of this thread helped the op . If the op hasn't lost the will to live by now take the general consensus that yes the 295 is faster in most but not all things but is that extra performance such as it is in some things worth enough to you to pay the extra.

i have the choice of the samsung 226w monitor and ive a sony kdl 46300x tv so i could go up to res, 2560x1600 thats why i ask if 2 Gainward ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 "Rampage would be worh it..

Back to helping the OP! The max res on the 226w is 1680x1050 and on the sony is 1080p so u wont be able to get 2560x1600 on either of these, need a 30" PC monitor for that res. TVs dont quite cut it yet so 1 4870X2 would likely be plenty good enough. You can always order one, see how it goes and if u want more power buy a second but i doubt u'd need it.

was just gonna say this. The TV will do 1920x1080, which does change things a little.

Stay away from triple or quad config's, they are not worth it. And even if you're rich, you really need to have a hard look at these config's to see if you think you're paying extra for much here (you aren't, they are a rip off imo). I don't care how much money one has, just don't support products that do not deliver something reasonable, simple as that. In your case, trip or quad is an absolute waste of cash, even if you do have money for it and then some.

So I'd settle for 4870 1GB Crossfire and probably skip the X2 altogether. You can start with one card, see how it goes and then grab another if it's not up to par for your needs.

Or if you fancy Nvidia, go for a 260 and do exactly the same thing if you want, as they are pretty similar. Maybe a touch less of a good buy on the value front, but so close that no one should bite you're head off over it.

These, imo, are the prudent routes to take. dual 285 (or a single 295) has it's place if you have the cash, too, nothing wrong with it, though the value front lacks a little here which is why some will still thinks its overkill (not the performance just what nvidia seems to think its worth on RRP). But triple and quad are highly irrational choices designed for those with more money than sense, who perhaps get far too much pleasure from buying "things", which, lets be honest, we are all guilty of at times.

And this argument about cars, etc, is so stupid. If you want to really talk about cars (do we have to?) in some way that reflects what's going on here, go directly to high end models and look at things like an Aston Martin vantage, and then the Aston Martin Vantage with carbon fibre and all that stuff which makes it all lightweight compared to the basic model. They are similar cars, both wonderful, but one cost far more and for hardly anything. This is a more accurate argument of what's going on here, and you damn well know it, fanboys.

Thanks Mr. Fragger.

tbh i found my 4830 does fine on my tv lol. ok i cant whack the AA up and crysis hates it, but then i dont like crysys and sitting 8ft away i dont need to turn the AA up lol. ive never seen a need for more than 2x on my tv, ill have to be honest. and the little 4830 eats it up at 1920x1080. a single 4870 as you mentioned im sure would satisfy the OP unless he has to have the fastest:)

perosally i'd got for a 4870 1GB, not an X2, but it's your choice.
