**EMPIRE TOTAL WAR**

Started as Ottomans:

Barbary States were allies & protectorate at start, which is never good as they are hated and are at war with everyone. Got rid of them and blocked all there trade routes at sea, should have a decent sized army marching towards them within 10 turns (Cairo starts with a lot of good buildings)

At war in every direction but Austria, and I've managed to calm Russia down. Still some pretty big fights coming my way from the south & north though. Allied with Sweden, Prussia and Poland-Lithuania, will help in the march north.

Ottoman army seems very hard to play, I've got a good tactic, depending on enemy confidence (usually only works if I have a full army, as they tend not to push) using 3 lines - Line Inf (Either Ordo or Elite Janissaries) Janissaries (Melee) followed by horse archers (arrows go over top)

Static cannons are really annoying me, they've got wheels and a 4 man crew, push it you fools!

Ive got a letter of demand from a province as theya re unhappy, is there any way to see what they want?

This is the first stage in a revolt.

I think the upper classes write you a letter if they are unhappy, the lower classes go on strike if they are.

The next stage will probably be rioting, if you still do nothing about it, a revolt.

Things to try:

Lower taxes for whomever is unhappy, increase military garrison, build happiness creating structures (theatres etc).

If the revolt happens in your capital, you will get a new government type if you side with the rebels and win.

As Sweden I sided with the rebels and changed from an Absolute Monarchy to a Republic.

What bonuses/penalties does a republic offer. I';m a constitutional monarchy at the moment. I have a decent goverment, and people in my provinces are happy. I'm a bit dubious about playing devils advocate with my people to revolt incase it cocks everything up lol

Absolute Monarchy
The leader is a king who won't be replaced until he dies. This can be good or bad depending on whether he's any good.
The cabinet can be replaced at any time, you have up to five people available as replacements.

Constitutional Monarchy
The leader is still a king, same as above.
The cabinet can be fired one person per turn and will be replaced by a new random person. Elections are held periodically, if the ruling side loses the opposition members listed will take over. I don't believe your cabinet have any limit on how long they can serve.

Republic
The leader is an elected president, who can only serve a certain number of terms even if his side keeps winning elections.
The cabinet is comprised of elected members too, with the opposition listed below. However, when the president changes, the whole cabinet is replaced with new random members.

On the plus side, this is good for keeping the people happy. On the negative side, you'll constantly be trying to get yourself a new decent cabinet since they all get kicked out every few elections.

Thanks Tombstone!

I think I'll stick with Constitutional Monarchy if I can then!

I'm getting fed up with the Spanish at the moment lol. They keep raiding my trade routes, I've managed to build a small high quality navel fleet which I sent over to the Americas to fend off the spanish raiders, and I'm slowly heading towards Madrid, I want to wipe Spain from Europe altogether.

for me this game is a step back rather than forward, its just not a Patch on METW2. Gunfire is boring ! I like pure steal and arrows flying through the air.

Each to his own !

Very much so. I loved Medieval Total War 1 and 2, but Empire is very different and I think it's unfair to compare them, especially when MTW2 has had a lot of work done on it to improve it.

One way they are very much the same is how the early game combat seems very....limited. Once you start getting more advanced units in (and by that, I mean technologies) it all gets a bit more interesting. Having said that, I seem to get the most pleasure out of developing my nation, rather than finishing off a campaign. Hence me having restarted again on Saturday.... :D

Oh, and the French are evil :(

I think it's a fantastic representation of one of the most interesting periods in history. Watching a band of screaming indians running into a volley of musket fire in slo-mo is giving me much more thrills than I ever got out of Medieval 2. :D

How you you change.

Im in the middle of a excellent game. playing Britian, just taken india. spend about 10 turns consolidating my terrorties i.e building quelling rebillions and the oppsition.

Now i ahve 18k comming in each turn.

starting building my 2nd rate ships, and my new invasion force, im eyeing up cuba and south america, take it off the spanish. i should be able to do that, and my magnificant navy will protect my british shores from any retialliation.

How you you change.

With regards to a change in the monarchy/republic, I believe you have to keep increasing the desire for reform (i.e colleges/universities cause the people to want a reform) then eventually when the populace become angered a revolution will occur and your forces will split, you then pick which side you want to fight on, so you choose the side of change then viva la revolution. - taken from my earlier post (#744)

its even better when you have fire by rank :)

seeing them charge, take two ranks of fire then scarper is very satisfying.

I assume if you have your men in 3 or 4 ranks only the front 2 ranks can fire?

thanks

I haven't yet purchased this so I wont comment too much on what I have seen in the demo. Empire was the natural progression for CA as far as I was concerned - with muskets/canon being available latterly in MTWII. You could see the way they were going. Which isn't a bad thing - but as is nearly always the way with a game based on epic foundations such as this, it will require some serious modification and or patching. I for one am trying my best to hold off buying it until there is a 'Realism' mod for it.

But the problem as far as I see it anyway, is the engine they use - how does it work with thousands of musket firing troops? Or the naval battles - or even the tech tree. People are saying they should have upgraded the engine prior to developing this theme as it is beginning to show its age and limitations. As for future expansions - where will it head next? I can't (or rather hope) it won't go into the WW1 era - I don't think the Total War engine can cope with musketry/gunfire as it is, but maybe the American civil war would be more practical using the current designs. Me personally, I hope they return to the classical era, to Rome, or maybe China, somewhere like that. I thoroughly enjoyed Rome Total War and I loved Medieval II, so anywhere in that direction would be good for me.

Never found The America's and gunpowder units in TWMII then?

Still can't help think the map is a lesser effort than TWMII, especially the way the globe map works as three screens (plus trade) and the tech tree is awful imo. I'm still playing it, enjoying the naval battles very much, but someone is going to have to mod this into something better, like SS with TWII.

Ps: how on earth do you recruit or gain new admirals? Is it through recruiting a general in city recruitment?
