Watchmen

Don't tell me the original ending, im yet to read the book.. awesome film, the time flew by considering it was on for a long time!

I saw it on the opening night at midnight. Man it's a LONG film! But good. All I'm going to say is Blue Wang.....

loved the film, thought it was awesome.

me and me mates were in stiches at the hallelujah love scene... everyone else must have been in the moment but we found it funny as :D

What was the original ending?

MASSIVE SPOILER!!!!! DON'T READ UNLESS YOU WANT TO KNOW THE ENDING OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL!!!

The graphic novel contains quite a few more story arcs not found in the film. One of them is about the New Frontiersman newspaper (Rorshach posts his journal to them towards the end of the film). One of them is about a boy at the newstand reading a pirate comic story (you can see him reading it briefly in the film). And another is about the author of the pirate story who goes missing. It's revealed towards the end that he's been living on a tropical island with a bunch of other artists. They think that they're shooting a movie and they've created this massive tentacles beast for it. Veidt's knowledge of genetics allows him to make this beast come alive and he teleports it to New York. The beast dies during teleportation but sends out a massive psychic shockwave, destroying half of the city. The world believes that it was an alien attack and they end hostilities against each other. Just like the film, the masked heroes tracking down Veidt decide that to reveal his plans would only cost more lives.

End of spoiler. :p

i thought it was hit and miss
the comedian, rorchash (spelling?) and dr manhatten being great; the rest were compelling but became camp cliche at points.

An example for me would the raw, functional, violence of rorchash juxtaposed with the the charlies angels posturing of nightowl and the girl when they come into the prison.

I havent read the comic and I would give this film a 6.5

edit- i was ****ing myself at the love scene too

Saw it last night, birllent film really enjoyed. The comedian was the best character.

Although I thought it was a bit too long, they could have easily cut 10 - 20min out of it and it would have been better, again IMO.

edit// haven't read the graphic novel but am i right in saying the comedian is the only character ever to have beaten volter (sp?) in a fight?

indeed. i couldnt hold back.

the guy to my right stopped munching his bloody popcorn for a minute too!

:p

Anyway, i should probably see it since its one of those films you should see. Haven't read the comics, so it doesn't interest me that much, but hey ill give it a look.

Loved it, like nothing I've seen before.

Best part of the film for me was Vietnam - flight of the valkyries, that made me lol.

Watched the late showing of this in the Vue cinema in Portsmouth last night.

Thought if was pretty good actually. Not the best comic book film I've seen but it is deffinatley in the top 5/10. Characters are well done and one of my friends said it followed the graphic novel (reasonbly) closley.

Highlights of film were the action and Lauire Jupiter getting semi/naked in some scenes :D

It was quite long but didn't really seem to take ages sat in the cinema, even though it finished near to 3 this morning.

Definatley recomend it.

I saw this last night.

I read the comic a month or so ago so was quite looking forward to it. The film was as good as it could have been. There was no way they could have tweaked it to make it better. It was long, but it couldn't have cut more out. The one criticism I had was the soundtrack which was generally exellent, but it had cheesy electric guitar music in places which didn't really fit. To be honest, that is being overly pedantic.

The acting was acceptable, the violence was retained (in fact, it was exaggerated). What stopped the film being perfect for me wasn't anything except for the fact that it was a film.

What made the comic so great was the build up of a world (like LOTR). Journal entries, newspaper snippets, commentaries etc at the end of chapters really immersed you into the atmosphere - what it was like being a superhero. That just isn't possible to do in the medium of film. The story of Watchmen requires lots of backstory, which makes it quite slow. I could imagine the length of the film might be too much to please some.

Also, I would like to state that the new ending isn't better or worse, it's just different and more suited to film. The dilemma is the same.

A very good film.

4/5

Rorschach looked great, both with and without mask. But DAMN - the voice was way off what I had in mind. Worse than Batman.

Yeah it wasn't deep or gravelly enough for me either.

Just seen the film and thought it was pretty good but seemed like there was enough backstory to have more than one film tbh. It was quite dense and still didn't have time to explore everything in enough detail for me.

*****Possible spoilers!****

All the stuff about vietnam, their parents/histories, the law stopping them from doing what they do...I thought they should have had a film covering that first. When it seems glossed over in an almost 3 hour film you start to think maybe they should have either cut stuff or split it into two/three films.

First and 2nd act, great, the 3rd act was ropey as hell. Rubbish ending and ridiculous sex scene.

It's about as close as anyone is ever likely to come adapting it though.

Saw this last night and to be honest I wasn't expecting what I saw, I bought the book a couple of weeks ago but have only read the opening part so really had no idea what the Watchmen was all about but suffice to say me expecting a film similar to the X-Men or Batman films was well wide of the mark

Part of me thinks it was total rubbish what with the first hour taken up primarily of flash backs and then with the final plot twist leading to a good guy turning out to be a bad guy only for to actually have good guy intentions and everyone having a big love in at the end albeit with the main character being killed off - all very confusing

The other part of me though thinks that looking at it as a movie and not a superhero movie then it was actually a quite engrossing watch

Initially after the film had finished I thought sod finishing the book but after some time to reflect I do think I'll give the book another go which may revise my opinion on the film....

Yeah that got to me as well, totally unneeded.

For me the best part was the first hour or so. Some excellent direction, acting and storytelling there.

I was mixed with anxiousness and excitement watching the film. On the one hand I really respect Synder's previous films which shows his ability to direct and his eye for visuals. 300 also proved (to me at least) that Synder has a great understanding between the film and graphics novel medium, which was what kept me interested in the Watchmen project.

I think he did a brilliant job adapting it, I think the changes made were good choices because it helped maintain the flow of the film. And I'm really glad Synder did a very close to original adaptation this time (as to 300 where he rewrote and restructured it greatly to fit the medium of motion picture) because I can now demonstrate more clearly to my friends why Synder is a better storyteller and director than Robert Rogdriadfazdzdsfadsfdkslfj or whatever his name is who adapted Sin City which I was (still am) severely disappointed in.
