Over there...
Looking to buy my nephew a 360 on the cheap, by getting one of the many broken ones and attempting to fix it. Its a gamble, but a worthwhile one - i've troubleshot, built and repaired hundreds of pcs over the years, and stripped and rebuilt my 360.

But my thoughts are whats the best fault to fix for a permanent solution?

Faulty dvd drives?
e73/other code
3RROD?

others?

cheers

e74 error, RRoD, graphics failures.

"Almost" always fixable.

This, it'll also be the cheapest option.

DVD faults are pretty easy if you have the knowhow/equipment to flash them, but obviously you have to factor in £20 to £40 for a new drive ontop of the console itself.

The only faulty 360s I tend to avoid buying on the cheap are the ones which are listed as "not playing games". This could be a simple fix - like a knackered drive or laser, but most likely is down to the owner trying to flash the drive firmware and cocking it up, resulting in a lost key. Unfortunately when the drive key is lost the console will never play a game again - it just becomes an expensive and rubbish movie DVD player.

I agree with Memphis though - E74, 3 red lights and general graphics issues are the ones that will have most success. The ones with DVD drive issues can be fixable, depending on what the issue is.

I saw a listing once saying something along the lines of "plays movie DVDs but not games, I'm sure this is an easy fix for someone with the know-how". No, someone with the know-how would know that that machine will never play games again ;)

I picked up a 3RROD 360 off a well known auction site for £21. Sent off to a certain 'Man of Honour' with £25 for a repair (after a failed attempt myself) and it works fine. Gets a fair bit of usage too.

Including postage both ways for repair it's cost a total of £66.

cheers, this man of honour may well come in handy again - met him once at a LAN i reckon' ;)

But i'll try grab one and have a go at it first...

I'm familiar with flashing the drives, and have the apporpriate PCI card etc, but reckon' as you say the cost of the drive could be prohibitive (tho i do have a PC Kreon drive - wonder if i could use that in the 360?

No a Kreon flashed PC drive won't work in a 360.

DVD drive issues aren't always that bad though - friend of mine got one off an auction site once that literally did just need a new laser. After swapping that out it was perfect.

E74's a good one as microsoft wont have them back after a year, theres loads of them about :)

I seem to be fixing a few E74's recently!!

k, i've bought 2 now :o (this could be an expensive mistake!) both supposedly with RROD.

Any suggestions on how i revive them? Best kits to use, a guide? anythigng at all?

If people prefer we can talk over email: [email protected]

cheers folks!

I just sold my RRoD 360 on Ebay for 50 quid! not sure why people don't just buy a new one for an extra 50£ or so??

I actually managed to sell the xbox and all accessories seperatly and get 120£ thats like 9 pounds off a new one isnt it?

aye, as i said above this is for my nephew - and i was gonna buy him an original XBox, but for the £55 i paid for these 2 360s (including 1 controller, power lead and AV lead NO HDDs) its worth a shot i reckon'

Just wondered if there was a preferred guide/kit out there?

can anyone offer advice, should i just buy an xclamp and repair my 360 or return it for exchange/repair. My 360 artifacts sometimes in games and had the 3 red rings for a while yesterday.

If it's still in warranty, you may as well return it. If it isn't, or you really don't care about that, do it yourself.
