The new ride ...

Just read this thread!.. OMG :) how entertaining..

The Grande Punto is pretty reasonable, I quite like the styling, it's inoffensive to drive, and I guess the OP got £2.5K off the list price, then it's not disastrous IMO..

Hope you enjoy it!

I haven't wasted my time reading all eight pages because it seems like an awful waste of time and, frankly, much ado about nothing.

Nice car, I like the Puntos.

family cars and performance are not mutually exclusive

I fail to see how a 6k mondeo ST220 wouldnt have been infinitely better. Would be pre 06 reg so only £200 a year a tax. Its very practical being a mondeo (even more practical than the punto) and comes with nice heated leather seats as standard.

Much better package, more practical, more luxury, more driver involvement, and being a ford, not expensive to run.

Only thing its not good at is fuel economy, but you've offset 10p a litre already by being petrol instead of diesel.

But you'd have like 7 or 8k (assuming you got 2k or so in px for the alfa) to save for the extra petrol, which would more than cover the cost of the extra petrol for the next century or so.

And look at the car i drive. Its a group 18 2.8V6 Turbo with 19" Alloys that does 161mph and with dubious interior build quality.

The missus loved the half leather recaros though! But we bought the car jointly, i told her what i liked, and she chose out of the ones i like which ones she did. Thankfull we both agreed.

But buying a family car that the missus likes doesnt mean you have to sell your motoring soul.

Why do people get so hot under the collar at people buying a new car?

because its a shocking waste of money that only people who have money to burn or buying a lease car as a business tool should entertain.

If its lease, its a monthly cost to the business like any other, and just gets written off. If you've got money to burn then fine.

But the OP doesnt have money to burn, hence why he lists fuel economy and low road tax as a list of buying requirements.

So why if money is so important, did he buy a car that he could have bought for thousands left if he'd bought one 18 months old still with 18 months warranty left ?

Thats like 4k saved already. Buying new is a shocking waste of money.

Steady on there. I'm against the new car thing but its quite obvious that a Mondeo ST220 would have been a completely pointless buy for the OP. It's this sort of daft suggestion that gives the anti new car bandwagon a bad name.

We've already established that his criteria for saving money are pointless

So all thats left of his criteria was that it be a practical family car, which the ST220 does perfectly. My point was that buying a family car that the wife likes doesnt have to mean you sacrifice your motoring soul, nor does it mean you'll have to break the bank, cosing half the money of the punto, leaving oodles for extra petrol and repairs.

Its not a suggestion, more an example of what else could be done if he wants a "practical" family car.

He doesn't car about speed, this is clear, so an ST220 would be an utter waste of time for him. A 1.8 Petrol version would be more suitable for someone who doesn't care about speed and you can save even more money.

Well, save yourself even more money and get a 2.0 Ghia X then. Early ones come with the ST220 kit as standard and still have all the toys of the ST.

You'd be selling your sole to the motoring devil though ;)

What would an ST220 offer him that a 1.8 Zetec wouldnt?

MOAR POWERZ!!

Which is obviously your main worry when you've just brought a 1.3 Diesel Punto...

A lot of people don't care for motoring, it's a waste of time trying to persuade them they can buy a faster car.

Why would you sell your sole to the motorway devil though? I mean seriously, they'd incinerate instantly in hellfire!

You don't "need" a 6CD changer and Air con. It sounds like the OP would be happy with anything with an engine and 4 wheels. Mind you having a 6 CD changer is quite handy :)
