The new ride ...

how's that going by the way ?

having sold your motoring soul when you bought a 4 cylinder bmw ;)
My soul was gone long before then :p Now I just drive in sound-isolated comfort with excellent handling in wet and dry so I'm all fine....until the next car ;-)

You don't "need" a 6CD changer and Air con. It sounds like the OP would be happy with anything with an engine and 4 wheels. Mind you having a 6 CD changer is quite handy :)

he doesnt "need" a car either.

Theres a perfectly good bus, and he has a perfectly good pair of legs. Dont start playing this game.

We've already established he's wasting his money. I was just trying to provide an insight as to what else could be bought for the money, including a 2 year old punto that was most probably 4k (at least) cheaper than the one he bought.

Lets not take this any more off topic.

whatever fox, talk to the left 'cos you aint right.;)

hehe, whatever was said about mondeo specs, whatever, BUT, you pointed out the most interesting thing, an 07 Punto for £4000 LESS than the OP's purchase. Now I dont know about the OP, but I could NEVER think of having the same car and justifying a 66% increase in price just for 'spec' or 'engine' unless it was something like 318i vs M3.

oh yes, a dirty lass might have 'sat' on the gearstick....better buy new.

because its a shocking waste of money that only people who have money to burn or buying a lease car as a business tool should entertain.

If its lease, its a monthly cost to the business like any other, and just gets written off. If you've got money to burn then fine.

But the OP doesnt have money to burn, hence why he lists fuel economy and low road tax as a list of buying requirements.

So why if money is so important, did he buy a car that he could have bought for thousands left if he'd bought one 18 months old still with 18 months warranty left ?

Thats like 4k saved already. Buying new is a shocking waste of money.

There is always a better financial choice when buying cars, get an older one, get a less spec'd one, get a slower one, etc, etc, etc..

I see all cars as spectacular wastes of money, anyone spending £12K on a new or old car is going to waste a serious amount of money..

Of course, spend £20K on any secondhand car and in 3 years you'd be lucky if it's still worth £10K, which would buy you the OP's car outright..

I think all the argument is really is over how much 'relevance' people put on the 'new' criteria when it comes to car choice..

Yep there are others I could have, but ford and vauxhalls whatever the model don't do it for me, I am not fond of french cars either, nothing specific, just a personal thing. I could go on, but at the end of the day we both liked the GP, and it ticked all the boxes for what we wanted :)

Just wanted to stick my nose in.... but LOL at 10K Punto to save money OMGLOlOLOL!

family cars and performance are not mutually exclusive

I fail to see how a 6k mondeo ST220 wouldnt have been infinitely better. Would be pre 06 reg so only £200 a year a tax. Its very practical being a mondeo (even more practical than the punto) and comes with nice heated leather seats as standard.

Much better package, more practical, more luxury, more driver involvement, and being a ford, not expensive to run.

Only thing its not good at is fuel economy, but you've offset 10p a litre already by being petrol instead of diesel.

This is exactly what I did, but I wanted performance aswell which is why I chose the ST. But it is quite expensive to run though.

I can't believe people are still going on about last night. Here it is everyone, I'm very sorry I was abusive and out of line. However, saying that anyone who doesn't personally own a car is not entitle to an opinion is just ridiculous. The fact that I do not own a car does not under any circumstances render my opinions invalid, it may entail that I have less driving experience but it also doesn't cater for the fact that I drive cars belonging to other people. I hope you understand where I'm coming from.

You're all quick to point out that the OP has "wasted" money by buying an '09' plate vehicle, but the car is still an asset which, at the end of the day, will be worth more when he comes to sell it than, say, an 07 reg Punto. So it's not as black and white as saying "you wasted £1,000." :)

Ok so it's gonna be worth more than an 07 plate with 30,000 miles on it which itself has 30,000 miles on it. Damn right it will. But the value of the car will be £4,500 which means it has lost £5,500!!!

Those aren't official figures but my guestimates, obviously.

That still doesn't mean he has paid £5,500 for the privilige of having a new car though. If he bought an 07 reg Punto, obviously he wouldn't have lost that much, but he still would have lost a fair amount. So really he hasn't actually paid as much as £5,500 purely for that new car smell.

It does mean exactly that because he's spent £5,500 extra over a used one to buy a new one. The used one will lost money, but it won't loose 5k over 3 years like you will on a new one. Punto's are crap for holding their money.

He'd have lost about £1500 on a used one which is no where near as bad and is the logical choice if your heart in set on a Fiat hatchback.

I wasn't debating the logical choice I'm just saying it's not entirely fair to say he would have lost £5,500. Anyway it's a pointless debate.

I know Puntos are horrendous for depreciation. I was very close to buying an ex-demo 1.4 T Jet last summer but they wanted something like £8k and I realised even that would have been a ridiculous decision. Glad I decided to keep my money and wait till i'm 21 when insurance is no longer an obstacle to the same degree :)

Which is a good thing, because the 10% saving in fuel will be up against the minor technicality that the Mondeo is going to be around 50% more thirsty than the Punto.
It'll also be more expensive to service, go through braking/suspension components more often and more expensive to insure.

:)

Back to this ? OK before you post next time check through. Were did I say I was buying a new car to save money ?
For the benefit of you not wanting to surf the entire god knows how many pages of slating me buying new :
But the point is I was going to change it anyway, just decided to do it a little earlier than I initially planned, Why spend money on the car thats going to be PX'ed in a year :)
Now seeing as I bought the 156 at 3 years old, I wanted to buy something new or near new, and is cheaper to insure/tax with good MPG figures.
Finding one with the spec and engine I wanted near new was proving pointless because of it not being particulary plentiful, and the deals on a new ones I could get, meant I didn't feel it was worth it.
The thread has gone way OT.
