More NI trouble? - Police officer shot dead

for one would like a united ireland, the uk gov were able to hand back the sovereignty of Hong Kong back in 97 why not hand back NI to the ROI and get it done with
Different circumstances - HK was rented from China for a fixed term then handed back. Northern Ireland was invaded and occupied....forgive the inflamatory language but it's the best way to describe what happened.

Because the majority who live her do not...

Says who exactly? When was the last time a poll of that sort was conducted? Im pretty sure the numbers in the north have been about even for some time now, if not slightly in favour of the catholic side.

The thing is though that Ireland doesn't want to join with the North! I have lived down there for a while and the majority of people say they don't want anything to do with Northerners!

To be perfectly honest, those living just over the border, love coming up here to get things on the cheap, especially now with the stronger Euro.

The local big chain supermarket (competitor) here is always packed with people from the south.

I think the main point is everyone has moved on apart from a few bandits and drugdealers.

A United Ireland would be 50 steps backwards and all hell would break out

Its called democracy. As long as the majority in Ni wish to reamin in the UK then so be it. if the majority wish to become part of Eire then that is what may happen. Another thing to bear in mind. If NI were forced into a united Ireland against the majority wish then the situation regarding terrorism would be reversed with loyalist paramilitaries fighting against the forces of Eire.

I couldnt care less if there was a united ireland. The thing most people overlook though is would the ROI really want the north to be part of it? I dont think they would

Read my post up a bit. They don't want anything to do with the North. Especially when they were doing well economically although they are in a mess at the moment compared to how well they were doing.

They would not want the burden of paying for security up north.

Correct. They replaced the Walther semi-auto.

OT but when a kidnap attempt was made on Princess Anne in the early 70s, one of her protection officers attempted to fire his Walther but it jammed. This put many forces off automatic weapons for years and they used revolvers instead.

Nowadays it is a different matter as the likes of Glock and SIG pistols are almost jam proof.

On topic, did anyone watch the live feed from Stormont where Peter Robinson, Chief Constable Orde and Martin McGuinnes all sttod together and condemned the attack ?

Watching Martin McGuinnes and hearing him condemn the attacks by Republicans and urging people to co-operate the PSNI sounded very surreal.
