Friend is getting into dj'ing, looking for the best dj software people think that is out there?

Price isn't really important, he has a few nights planned and a lot of stuff in the works, time to learn something new though.

Runs windows, no mac stuff :)

ableton, though i looked at it and turned it right off, tracktor is user friendly. but i think if hes willing to learn, ableton will be better.

Traktor is a doddle to use and closest to 'real' DJing. Ableton is immensly powerful and has some neat features but may be over the top for what he needs.

I found Mixmeister fusion a great little app for putting mixes together but still love traktor :)

The best is Ableton, but it's expensive and doesn't imitate real mixing in anyway.

Virtual DJ is pretty good but has some annoyances (like the key lock function not working properly).

Tracktor is starting to be used by more big names (read: Richie Hawtin) but i've not used it in a long time so couldn't comment personally

Get urself some CDJ's and a mixer (Pioneer) its a lot more fun that mixing on a pc!

If you really want to go down that route, then go with ableton,

The only things worth considering are Stanton - Final Scratch and Rane/Serrato - Scratch Live. I'd recommend the latter more though. I'm assuming he has real turntables as well though...they'll be needed.

Yeah if he has decks then serrato or scratch would be your best bet.

However, if he does mixes on a PC only then Ableton is the best software package. Problem is that it takes awhile to get to grips with. He will also have to wrap his tracks before he uses it live.

traktor scratch with his turntables. NOTHING is more fun than a traktor scratch/serato/final scratch.

ableton with a uc-33e controller could be another choice but woudlt ake some time setting up and getting used to.

I used to use Traktor for 'real' pc djing, now use Virtual DJ.

Ableton doesn't really work in the same way as djing, so even though I do use it from time to time, I wouldn't consider it djing software.

Virtual DJ, and if he has decks already, dont buy serato or final scratch, just buy a maya 44 USB soundcard and buy the timecode vinyls from the VDJ site, no need to spend 300+ quid on a poxy soundcard with stanton or serato branding on it when a maya does exactly the same thing for 60 quid

Fruityloops, everything else everyone has said on here is rubbish they must all be Amateurs

You clearly don't grasp what the OP is looking for. I won't even start on fruityloops or the rest of your comment though.

Scratch Live, Traktor and Final Scratch are the only things that are up to standard and worth using outwith a bedroom. The last thing you want in a club is substandard software and hardware.

The above programs will allow you to still use the same decks (with timecode vinyl) thus you don't have to learn any new "skill". They're simple, effective, reliable and instantly accessible if you're coming from real turntables. Swapping between MP3 and vinyl is as simple as changing the record. If he's into scratching then it's the way forward. He may not be at this point although the less limitations put on you from the software/hardware the better.
