Resident Evil 5 - The Source of All Evil (360 & PS3)

You can force the PS3 to upscale by unchecking other resolutions in your display options.
Tried that with Burnout Paradise and it went to 576p instead of 1080p :(

I told myself I would hold off buying RE5 until it was cheaper but I think I will break that promise :o

Have you still got the 40w2000?

I've had a few games here which have upscaled to 1080p.
Rainbow 6 Vegas was one of them, and I forget the other.

It looked terrible to me. You could see that it wasn't "proper" 1080p, the text looked... I don't know how to explain it, but just poor quality.

To to my eyes, the 40w2000 does a far better job of displaying 720p games, than having them upscaled to 1080p. I can't vouch for other TVs of course.

It actually stopped me playing Rainbow 6, the only way to play it in 720p was to go into the PS3 settings, and deselect 1080p as being a supported res... so I'd have to do that before I played it, and set it back afterwards. I even wrote to them, to ask if they'd fix it in a patch, but they said it was a "feature" lol So, I didn't play it.

So definitely, if you're still running the 40w2000, you're far better off with the TV doing the scaling.

It automatically upscales unless the game doesn't support it, otherwise you will go down to 576P.

Not here it doesn't, on both my TV or projector.

720p games display at 720p, 1080p games display at 1080p.
So basically 95% of the games I have here run in 720p, despite 1080p being checked. Games like PSN games, and GT5p/Ridge Racer/Wipeout HD all run in 1080p. I've never had a 720p game automatically upscale to 1080p, apart from two games which were coded to do so.

Allowing the TV to scale the image is a lot better quality here, than when the PS3 does it.

It is game dependant from what I read in other posts. I must have got lucky or its my TV forcing it to output at 1080p as opposed to the PS3 upscaling.

Anyway back on topic.

/RE5 can't wait. 1 hour left at work. Couldn't come any quicker.

Ouch! And it does this, even if you leave 720p checked?
I guess if a TV isn't very good at scaling, then it would be handy.
Certainly from what I've seen, my displays do a better job than the PS3 does.

Anyway, quite right, I'm off for a game now.
Cheers.

Well i've finished the game twice and they are the only 2 online modes i can see.

Well I am not sure then, I read it in the AVForums preview thread, not sure if it was the 360/PS3 one but he had a screenshot of the guide and long details of the game modes, i would post a link but that site sends the alarms off downstairs in the IT dept. :D

No I was referring to when I leave them all uncheked. Others said it forced to 567p but my TV always outputted at 1080p so I presume my display was doing its own upscaling and I wasn't aware that the PS3 was actually dropping to resolution down.

Will have to do some testing tonight.

Best thing to do, IMO, is tick the boxes your display supports.

If it's 720p, it'll display 720p and your display will scale it, if it's a 1080p game, it'll display in 1080p.

But yep, some people have disabled 720p, to make the PS3 output the games at 1080p instead. I think many times this works, but sometimes it'll drop it down to 576p.

Still, on my two displays, as I said, outputting a 720p game at 720p and letting the display scale it, looks better than when the PS3 outputs a 720p game at 1080p.

Maybe this varies from display to display, or maybe some people think a higher number is better... ie, if the PS3 is outputting 1080p this must be better. Of course, the game is still only rendered at 720p, it's not like a PC game, where you're changing the resolution.

I'm playing Resi 5 right now, my 1080p TV is running at 720p, and it looks fine :) (as it's meant to) I don't want the PS3 to scale anything, it's a 720p game, and my TV is running in 720p mode.

Great game so far, playing it through online co op with a friend who got it early too. Great fun, much better than I thought was going to be. :)

I have a 40W2000 which has a very good scaler so I guess I will leave the LCD do the upscaling.

How is the difficulty of the game, is it hard like RE4 or easier?

That's what I thought, well I can assure you, that on my 40w2000, 720p games look much better at 720p that at 1080p. Obviously proper 1080p games look best of all, but 720p games look better when the TV is running at 720p. I can't really describe it.... if you play a 1080p game, the text, for example, is pin sharp. On 720p, it's a bit softer of course, and on a 720p game upscaled by the PS3 to 1080p, the text is... distorted somehow. Not a massive amount, but it's just not as good as when left at 720p.

As for RE5, I was one of those that was going to leave it, and pick it up cheap. I've been playing it for the past hour and a half, and I'm loving it, and having trouble putting it down, despite I should be doing something else really. I've not died yet, and all I can compare it do is the demo, as I've never played a "3D" resi game before.... I'm getting on with it better than the demo version though... maybe because the controls were totally foreign to me, whereas now I'm getting to grips with them.

Frankly, I'm loving it! and I really wasn't expecting to, to be honest! Really glad I bought it now!

I played 1-3 but never played 4 so I can't really comment, but RE5 is real easy IMO, completed in under 9 hours on the hardest setting.

Few achievement sites are even putting this into the Under 10-15 hours easy 1000g, with the likes of Asterix, Bolt, Cabelas series, etc. :o

Bless em for trying lol

T-Virus outbreak at ******.co.uk warehouse!

Official sources have reported that a T-Virus infection has engulfed a section of the ******.co.uk arehouse however they have confirmed that it has now been contained.

It is suspected that the source of the contamination was the ****** Exclusive Chris Redfield figurine that a limited number of Resident Evil 5 preorder customers would be receiving.

Although the outbreak is yet to be naturalised, *******.co.uk have confirmed that all preorders for Resident Evil 5 will not be affected and will be despatched uncontaminated in time for delivery on release day.

They have also confirmed that customers who were originally promised a Chris Redfield figurine will still be receiving one, however the figurine will be despatched separately at a slightly later date.

Initial reports suggest that a BSAA Team are already on site performing a clean up operation, so customers can expect to receive their Chris Redfield figurine by the end of next week.
