Currently have £55 - £60 pounds kicking about to go towards a new hard drive, about 500 GB would be ideal, have a 320GB at the moment.

Will be using the new drive as my primary drive.
Which one is best to go for ? because I'm not sure about which one to get

Which F1 ?

whats the difference between this having a 32mb thing and the others having 16mb ?

its the amount of cache available to the drive. basically the 32mb of cache will out perform the 16mb of cache

Definitely the WD5001AALS or for a few extra quid, the WD6401AALS.

Western Digital drives have best overall performance stats, run cool and pretty quiet, and the AALS models come with 5 year warranty.

Sammy F1 500GB 16Mb Cache

There is very little the difference between the 32mb cache 16mb!

I have had both and cant really notice any difference.

get a samsung F1 320 for £41, can't find a better bargain than that price/performance/GB comparison wise and the 320 is sposed to be the 2nd fastest drive of the range (only beaten by the 1TB version) because it is a single platter drive matey (and a 2nd drive is reasonably affordable in the future so when you can afford it, get another, raid them together and get the same space as a single 640GB drive but better performance also), or you can't go wrong or a WD Caviar Black 640GB at around £64.

I forget who it was, i think that it was Western Digital (though it may have been samsung it was one of those two) who said that their is by and large no performance gain between 32MB cache and 16MB cache and that the only reason that they used 32MB Cache was because it was what the competition were, by and large, using even though it provided practically no performance increase atleast not to the same comparison as single platter performance drives such as with the F1 series in comparison to multi platter drives of the same storage capacities.
