Has PC Gaming Died over the past year or so?

I guess the fact that these debates exist suggests big change on the horizon for PC gaming, whether this equates to terminal illness is another matter.
However I feel I no-longer wish to purchase PC titles as I do not wan't to invest money into a format which appears to be ill bordering on terminally. excuse my use of metaphors!haha. Shame.

i do think the pc is struggling with lousy drm ridden console ports at the moment but continues to do well with things like mmorpgs, sims games rts games, football manager games and the occasional killer offline rpg such as the witcher plus downloadable more casual games like the sam and max series - if companies stop making buggy console ports it will get better. i believe pc games are declining mainly due to memory hungry windows and crummy graphics chips by intel and pcs from high street retailers where the adverage consumer shops which never have decent graphics cards installed and a lack of consumer education on what you need to play games decently on a pc/laptop. yes pc games arent what they used to be but they are deffinitly not going to die completly anytime soon

It entirely depends on what games you play really,
If your a MMO fan or RTS its better than ever
but for most other genre of games barely anything is coming out,
consoles get God of War, Metal gear, Killzone and resident evil 5 etc

Recent games like Empire Total War are true PC titles. But these are getting rarer and rarer. Most PC releases these days (the top titles) are just console ports....so yes, true PC gaming is indeed in a slump. The PC is rapidly becoming just a web browser/MMO platform.

Nobody can really sit there plugging their ears going "lalala this isnt happening" anymore. There is no smoke without fire, these threads keep on popping up time and time again both here and on countless other boards for a reason.

These threads are not the creation of a console gaming Illuminati, designed to undermine confidence in the pc platform. If there wasn't a problem, there'd be no threads, simple as that.

They are created by ignorant morons whose number allow the threads to run perpetually. Usually you can run all this back to some bullcrap article at Shacknews and since they do nothing but post nonsense all day about anything you can't really credit them to anything.

Just read what the OP actually said "I don't know anything about PC games lololo but is the PC platform dead?!" ... he basically knows nothing about recent and upcoming PC releases and on the back of the lack of knowledge declared anything he hasn't heard of before to not exist at all and hey presto, this thread is made.

Then read some of the other posts in here, such as the absolute doozy "I like BF2 more than CoD4, proof that PC gaming is dead" ... this is the level of retardation you're dealing with in your so called smoke.

Are people totally forgetting about competitive gaming? whats it done on and where is the most money? pc gaming.

I personally dont see pc gaming dying depending on how u look at it.

Though i do see in the future console gaming having a much much bigger competitive market.

Why do you always become so angry whenever this topic is brought up? Don't take this so personally.

It isn't anger, just a mild irritation. There are either trolls of genuinely misguided people in this thread who believe this nonsense. Of which the absolute only way of backing it up is to run off a few anecdotes about how they haven't seen any big releases this month or their local shop used to have a whole wall of PC games and now only a shelf etc.

But the irritation comes from when they use this benign, anecdotal drivel as an argument as if anyone who actually follows PC gaming can return anything but a /facepalm. In all of the idiotic threads of this nature I have yet to see one single post of those claiming the terminal condition of PC gaming quote a single digit from a set of numbers to back it up. So where have any of them arrived at such a conclusion other than to be so narrow minded as to believe the hand full of games they know about and whether or not they like them is a litmus test for the entire industry and world wide census on the matter.

Have you actually played any of the games he mentioned? In what way are they 'not worth playing'?

All the games he mentioned are supurb. Killzone 2 for example is absolutely fantastic, better that any FPS I've played on the PC for a while.

your sarcasm detector is broken mate

Meh, I wouldn't say it is necessarily dead, most FPS games are still better on PC in the graphics front and the control front, RTS are of course better, MMO's are better. The main problem for PC is the amount of console ports we are getting. Developers give us PC users a rushed poor port of a game, it doesn't sell that well, then they claim that 'piracy' is the reason why it didn't do that well, trying to justify the reason why their crap game didn't sell.

Its a sad circle unfortunately =/

Huh?

PC gaming isn't dead. But the gaming market has opened up significantly over the last decade. Consoles are now able to achieve what used to be the reserve of the PC (graphically rich environments, online multiplayer, 'hi-def', etc). Thus the gaming industry now reaches a wider audience.

As such developers that would have been working exclusively on PC titles are now able to supply a wider variety of platforms. Take Ensemble for instance; developed Age of Empires for PC - and their final release was Halo Wars for the 360... Yes, we now have exclusive titles on certain platforms. But this can be due to publishing agreements, costs of development, etc... it doesn't mean the PC gaming market is dying. Just the GAMING market is growing.

There's no point in throwing monkey cr@p at each other over which hardware is superior. If you're a real gamer then you'll not be handicapped by loyalty to a single platform. Personally, if I had the money and the time, then I'd own all consoles and a l33t PC.

Gaming is very much alive imo.

I actually sold my ps3 and have built a new pc because pc games are a lot better i love rpg's consoles can never produce a decent rpg plus i love pc for better graphics and i find the net is a lot better than console's.

Im a little out of the PC gaming scene as I've been giving my attention to my job over the last year, and in that time not one PC game has made me want to give it some attention. There have been a fair few console games but no PC games.

Have I missed something? I read something once about some developers starting to give up on PCs because of piracy and the like, does this have anything to do with it?

Maybe it's just me but, meh :(

Its not dead just yet but extreme piracy means the X360+PS3+Wii currently get most of the developers & publishers attention as despite there being well over 100m gaming PC's in the world the actual games struggle to sell well as many PC gamers are happy to pirate them for various reasons (mainly because its easy for them to do so:rolleyes:). Nvidia alone have sold over 80m Geforce8 or higher gfx cards so include ATI into the mix and there are probably around 140m gaming capable PC's in the world which is more than X360+PS3+Wii combined:eek:

In the past year the PC actually had quite a few decent games although all were console ports as almost every game nowadays is a multiplatform design so its the same game on PS3+X360+PC apart from some slightly better PC graphics & usually a higher FPS as well. I cannot see this changing much anytime soon especially with the economic climate as it is we may see even less PC ports now:eek:

GTA4 sold over 12m on the consoles. PC sold less than few 100K so far!
COD4 sold over 7m on the consoles. PC has not even sold 1m yet!
Fallout3 sold over 5m on the consoles. PC has sold over 850k to date.
Crysis sold over 1m copies on the PC. Its not on consoles as they cannot handle its graphics!
Left4Dead sold around 1m on both PC & X360.

When you consider there are well over 100m gaming capable PC's in the world and most games struggle to get anywhere near 1m it becomes obvious what the future direction will be:(
