Microsoft to kill off Internet Explorer

Just like the MS buying Dell thread, I'll believe it when I see it.

Why did you post an article which is based on pure speculation with no facts whatsoever?

Haha, considering they're releasing articles saying IE8 is faster than Firefox and Chrome, I really don't think they'll be dropping it any time soon. Especially seeing as they still control the majority of the market. They won't give that up easily.

Whilst I recommmend and use Firefox, and hate IE for it's web standard quirks, it's a great browser nowdays. I doubt it'll be killed off anytime soon.

Right... so Microsoft is going to send the world back to the mid 90's. Where people used boot up their shiny new PC and then install their favourite web browser from a magazine CD? I doubt that.

MS have left most features in Windows 7 (excluding Windows Mail and Windows Movie Maker), and put and on/off switch for some - without any prompting from the EU.

Yeah, your right, a number of multi million euro law suits by the EU is nothing like 'prompting'....

Microsoft were forced to release some versions of XP without Media Player because of EU cases, they then got into big trouble as it came bundled with Vista, so they have now taken the step to allow things like IE and MP to be removed from Windows, to avoid more court cases.

Its ENTIRELY prompted from the EU.

Quite, they weren't 'told' to do it, they did it off their own bat. Just arguing semantics though, really. :p

I don't thjink they got into any more trouble when releasing Vista - they, again, released 'N' versions without Window Media softwares. The EU haven't made any more noise about that point since the original decision. They do keep whinging about non-compliance with handing over source code and documentation to 3rd parties, though...

It's interesting to note that if proof was ever required that the EU really doesn't know what the "general public" want - not a single copy of the N version of the Vista software has actually sold.

The bottom line is that where people want to use another browser or media player than what Microsoft supply - they still want those features included "out of the box".

Not only that, people like RealMedia hailed the decision as levelling the playing field and allowing them to expand their market share.

Can't actually see how they thought it would make a difference? Their software's still crap, for a start.

Ha, very true. Without IE pre-installed on my new laptop, how would I have downloaded Firefox? Far from being unfair to the competition, its inclusion is the necessary route to their discovery.

exactly, this is why it's so retarded.

i don't use IE, or WMP

but i wouldn't take MS to court because they're on my system!

to 99% of users, they just want a browser and a media player, that's what ms gives them
