Government intend new travel regulations

It is a waste of money for very little gain. They go on about Terrorism this, terrorism that.

If you actually think in your life what has annoyed you most, Bin Laden or all these ******** security checks and stuff.

If you didn't watch TV you wouldn't know terrorism existed.

It can't be denied that we aren't moving towards an orwellian state though can it?

Wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference voting conservative as both parites serve the same master(s).

Don't you mean it can be denied? Yes of course every year we see increasing levels of intrusion from the government on trivial matters, but to suggest Britain is heading for a society akin to 1984's is totally wide off the mark. Read the book. As a matter of fact, Britain is without equal when it comes to things such as voicing one's own views and opinions without consequence - much unlike the subject matter covered in 1984 or such. If I really wanted to start a comparision or debate on why today's reality is nothing like anything Orwell has written, I'd have to start a new thread altogether.

As for the second point, why don't you start questioning for once all these crackpot theories and conspiracies you bring to the forums with such alarming frequency. You claim that we're close-minded and not questioning the current situation enough, yet you hypocritically don't provide more than a second's thought as to why these preposterous notions of lizardous overlords and new world orders and illuminati behind-the-scenes manipulation are even remotely feasible.

Just another excuse to put us on a database which will inevitably get stolen anyway.

Oh no, the government don't let things get stolen.

Where they really excel is leaving this information on public transport for you to find, it's like a treasure hunt!

It seems a bit stupid to me - Can the government not ask the airlines or ferry companies about this information?

I mean if you book a flight from London to Malaga, you're hardly travelling from Belfast to Canada?

And to ask about your credit card details?! For what reason do they NEED to know this?? So are they effectively saying "We're going to check your credit cards to make sure you aren't buying something we don't want you to?"

Isn't that exactly the same as saying "You can only spend your money in a British government approved way no matter where you may be. We'll know almost exactly everything you do."

Although the details aren't exactly clear so it's pretty much speculation at this point.

And what about us in Northern Ireland??? If I go down to the Republic do I have to put the details on the internet? How are they going to know that I was out of the country?

If they intend to make a sort of "border patrol" I think that kind of thing has already been proven to be a HUGE mistake. The British ARMY tried, and it wasn't even anywhere near successful.

What's next? Will I need a passport for travelling between counties?

The more this goverment is in power the more I think George Orwell was right when he wrote the novel 1984.

Correct, it doesn't matter what power or party gets in - the agenda is still the same. Think about the people whon influence the governments that we don't know about. Their the ones who rule. Super rich families, been in power for yonks.

Read the whole article and not once did they seem to mention a reason for this.

How can the government warrant such extreme plans on top of the new ID system in such a poor financial time?!

The bit at the end seems the only reason:

A UK Border Agency spokesman defended the e-borders scheme. "It allows us to secure the UK's Borders by screening people as they travel in and out of the UK.

"The e-Borders scheme has already screened over 82m passengers travelling to Britain, leading to more than 2,900 arrests, for crimes including murder, drug dealing and sex offences. e-borders helps the police catch criminals attempt to escape justice."
Makes a change from the "OMG TERRORISM!" excuse that we usually get.

But surely if you're screening people coming in and out of countries, it should be a quick name screening against those who have warrants out or are wanted for questioning. Not every Mr Bloggs who wants to take his family to Spain with a full credit card check and questionnaire.

e: I'm fairly sure what I've mentioned is already working well so why the sudden need for change? :/

Just a matter of time before they want travel plans as well though. I got a schengen visa from the German embassy 2 years ago without much hassle. (apart from the 2 months it takes to get an appointment :p) Gave my airline tickets to Italy and out of Germany, along with one airline ticket of travel between Croatia and Hungary, proof of accommodation in all the places, proof of being a student and bank statements etc. and explained that i'l be travelling between the other countries via train and those tickets are purchased there and then. Little of bit thing about my proof of student looking dodgy, but nothing much. Had the visa the next day. Also on basis of these documents, got visas for Slovenia, Slovakia, Croatia, Hungary and Czech Republic.

Last year however, went to the Belgian and the Finnish embassy with the same documents, and they suddenly wern't good enough. They wanted to know why I was going there and the answer 'tourism' wasn't good enough. Wanted details of what exactly I was going to see there =/ That really annoyed me. I don't do all my research in advance. A bunch of us are going, and I wanted to go along. But no, they want written proof of what exactly i'm going to see and why. And when I answerd tourism to the woman in the finnish embassy, I got the reply "Why finland? there are other places to go for tourism". THat really annoyed me. Bit my tongue to stop myself from saying "yes. and if you look at my passport before just asking me all this, you'l find i've been to most of these other places =/" Belgian embassy wanted proof of how i'm going to travel between the different countries. I said that i'm going to purchase tickets when i'm there but that's not enough apparently. Even though it was the previous year.

Already happenign in terms of those. And with this new regulation, most likely be soon enough that it'l happen to locals :p

:/

Can't wait to get out of this country after i finish college + uni.

Good grief. An announcement of a questionable policy which can be abolished and suddenly it's the end of the world. I'm completely unbothered about this for anything other than financial reasons.

I will be the first to predict the 'give an inch, they take a mile' statements, but I feel quite comfortable that our courts will end up having the last word.

Passengers leaving every international sea port, station or airport will have to supply detailed personal information as well as their travel plans.
...
rules which will require the provision of travellers' personal information such as passport and credit card details, home and email addresses and exact travel plans.

I swear that if I'm ever asked "what are your exact travel plans" I will reply: well I'm going to nip into Iran, visit Pakistan before heading off to North Korea and then stop by Cuba on the way back.

...and still people call me a nutjob because I see what is happening and try to inform the sheep about it.

Wake up people, ffs! How much more can we take before we have to push back? If you have a child, look into their eyes and ask yourself what sort of country and world would you like them to live their lives in, certainly not one like this. These people are insane.
