STEAM Download speeds as of late.....?

I get around 200-400 kbs when I tried to download GTA 4. There's a lot of problem with Valves atm. They're getting a lot of bad glitches from Team Fortress 2. So it may be them uploading patches etc.

Downloaded Titan Quest at a steady 1mb/s
Downloaded expansion straight after, fluctuated between 120k/s to 500k/s, average was 170k/s

I'm on a 10mb connection and I'm not being throttled.

The problem is Steam.

Mmmmmm.. Okay.

I tried disabling Windows firewall, no difference.

I enable it and RESET all SETTINGS within it, clearing all exceptions etc and my download speed is now fluctuating upto 400KB/s which is double what I was getting before.

Coincidence?

It is Windows 7 Beta so anything is possible I guess?

I'm on VM, no speed problems here.

Unless the servers are overloaded, like they have been for the past week with the UT3 pre-load/free weekend.

I'm on Windows 7 Beta build 7000 iirc, no problems this end, using Kaspersky Internet Security 2009

I installed fear 2 today, the download speed (for the update) was between 10 to 15 kbps, basically steam made me wait 1 hour to play fear 2, not impressed.

but in every other download (hl2 +mods) they are good and maxes my connection (bt 800 kbps)

go figure third party addons is not steam i guess.

wow 50mb whats ur upload?? i,guessing 512kbps? like every1 else?

also with virgin here and I noticed that I was getting a max of 200 kb/s when downloading the total war pack last week. I put it down to the system being busy with the new release.

Zen ADSL Max 8MB, although I'm on 6MB Line speed. I maxed out the connection on Steam during Weds - Fri of this week for UT3Black free weekend.

I know that doesn't help, but again for more evidence?

VM 20Meg service.

Maximum download speed is 300KBS. It never ever goes above that. It took me about 5 days to download GTA IV.

Also on vm 20 meg, I often download at 2.0 ish mb s for a while, then when games are hitting 70% ish the service drops to around 30kb/s

For those like me who use Virgin for their ISP, don't forget that they have some rather restrictive limits during the day before your connection will be throttled.

Basically, depending on your package, downloading a couple of gigs between 9am and 9pm will get your connection throttled by 75% for up to 5 hours. Specifics here.

Virgin really need to sort this out, as it does make downloading legitimate digital content during the day a total joke, especially given the size of some games these days.
