Swapping PS3 Hard drive ?

Just hope it doesn't **** up stuff due to the faster drive, as I heard that can happen.

The problem with 7200rpm drives these days is it generates more heat than a 5400, obviously since you're going to be using a 3.5" drive externally that won't be a problem. A few months ago there was a problem with the PS3 in certain games where a faster drive would cause it to crash, however apparently firmware updates have fixed this.

Ah that's neat, though I just realized I have no spare cables and haven't a clue on how the drive is going to get power. :o

I will be getting a PS3 at the weekend and will be more than likely putting a 320GB in it. Just a couple of questions,

1: If the PS3 is brand new and never used, you can just switch the hard drives as soon as you get it out of the box, no need to backup, right? As all the basic stuff like os and xmb are stored on a flash chip inside the PS3?

2: Just out of interest, what make are the hard drives that Sony use?

1. Yes

2. My 40GB was a Seagate one.

for reference some 40gigs are different. Some have slot for HDD straight, some (older) have them going in sideways like the 60gig ones. My mate done his at the weekend and he was on latest F/W and after swapping drive was asked to update F/W from cd or mem stick before it could setup the HDD. Had a look around on the internet and apparently newer PS3's don't have all the F/W stored in flash mem on the console or where ever its stored - part of it is actually stored on the HDD on newer Ps3's, so when you swap it asks for F/W as its missing (60 gig and some 40gig as mentioned store all on flash mem). This could also be one of the reasons people have problem with F/W updates and failed units as there is a lot less chance of F/W installing wrong when stored in flash mem than using a HDD for part of it i would imagine.

I need to change my 40GB HD to a bigger one. Can someone link me to a Hard drive here on OcUK that will fit into my PS3 please.

Something around the 250 - 320 GB size I think.

Just dont want to order the wrong one.

thanks

As long as it's 2.5" sata2 drive at 5400rpm it should be fine. Only exceptions are some of the 500gb drives don't physically fit, and 7200rpm drives are of little benefit and may cause overheating. Ocuk sell quite a few that will be fine, there's a western digital 320gb drive for around £50 that fits the bill

I have a 40GB model and mine was all done within 10 minutes. Just backed up, swapped, formatted then restored. No issues :)

I'm just about going to this myself, just a quick question though, before I remove my old 40gb hdd do I need to deactivate my profile from my PS3 ? or do you only need to do that when you change your PS3 ?
