For anyone interested, I thought I'd start a thread to track the progress of my Golf. OK, on to the first mod:

As standard the Mk2 Golf GTI handles nicely, it's very neutral, with a bit of understeer when on/past the limits of grip. It's a very predictable and forgiving chassis.

As good as it is, I prefer my cars to be a little more biased towards oversteer on/past the limit, so to that end I decided to fit an uprated rear ARB. I decided to use a Whiteline adjustable rear ARB as I've used these previously on the Scooby and both Integras with great results, and as luck would have it I found a barely used one for sale on the Golf MK2 forums. I managed to get it for the bargian price of £60 (including droplinks and all fitting hardware). A great buy, considering you can't get them for much less than £200 new at the moment.

Fitting was a little different to the Scooby and 'Tegs, on those cars it's a replacement for the standard ARB, but the Golf doesn't have a rear ARB as standard. The Whiteline item is fitted by basically 'strapping' it to the rear beam, then picking up on the lower strut bolts via drop-links.

Here are a couple of (poor) pics of it fitted:

I also had an alignment done, with 1.3 degrees of negative camber dialled in at the front.

So has the ARB and alignment made a difference? Hell yeah, 'night and day' doesn't even come close to describing the difference. Previously my Golf's handling felt a little 'wooly' (probably due to the alignment being out), but now it's totally transformed.

Less bodyroll, turn-in is improved, and understeer is vastly reduced. It now oversteers at/past the limit in a predictable and controllable manner. The mod has done exactly what wanted it to do: Shift that natural neutral handling of the Golf backwards, with more bias towards oversteer. Overall grip is improved too, I reckon I can corner a good 5-10 mph quicker now too.

VERY pleased with the result

Nice, I didn't realise messing with the Rear arb made any difference :o

I'd not even considered touching the one on my car,

Sideways action on roundabouts now then 'Mr Drifto'? :D

Yep, playing with ARB stiffness alters the handling characteristics of any car. Basically:

- Stiffer rear ARB = More prone to oversteer.
- Stiffer front ARB = More prone to understeer.
- Uprate both = Similar neutral characteristics as standard but with improved overall grip.

Sounds like fun, only heard good things about the whiteline ARB's. I've been offered a new one for £100, think I'll have to go for it :D

Alernatively, softer front end for similar effect.

My only concern with that is that you have made the twist beam even stiffer so its even more likely to do that rear wheel lifting thing you get from limited droop. Whats it like on a bumpy B road?

will stiffer rear ARB push a car that is prone to understeer more into neutral territory then ?

sure will, my car understeers a little when driving hard since fitting my front strut brace, going to balance it out with a stiffer rear ARB

Meh, 80's hot-hatches are supposed to corner on 3 wheels ;)

As for bumpy B-Roads, it has made it a little more 'jiggly' at the back, the rear wheels feel more 'linked', but the benefits definately outweigh those small issues.

Looks like you have a lot of ground clearance there, too much for an old VW ;)

:D

It's actually sitting on the small ramp that leads into my garage, that and the fact that the hard-standing slopes away make the arse stand up like that.

The car is actually pretty damn low, it's on Venom motorsport -60mm springs and shocks. The tops of the tyres are tucked in the arches and the exhaust scrapes on that ramp into my garage, so I couldn't go any lower even if I wanted too...

I had a rear ARB fitted to my Leon a few months back. It's balanced for a little understeer but it's so much better than it was previously. It really doesn't like uneven roads though, as the back end is so much stiffer if only 1 side of the suspension is getting compressed.

Mega (surface) rust! Quite scary looking at some of those photos, suppose its a bit too late to under seal?

I take it you've never seen the underside of a 10+ year old car? That's normall surface corrosion, thick parts like axles etc are generally given a thin coat of black in the factory (that or nothing at all) so it's quite normal to see surface corrosion like that.
