GTA4 is very CPU dependant, so as psychas said you need as powerful CPU as you can get + 1 gig graphics card (if you have less than 1 gig the game would not let you max settings).

I don't mind saying that my mates PC which is the same as mine (cpu, OC, RAM, resolution etc) is quite a bit faster with an 8800gtx than my 4850. Maybe the extra vram I don't know. My benchmark is 39/40 his is 48/49

Surely that means you can't with the GTX295, what with it only having 896MB of memory available?

quoting myself!! ignore that. the 9.3s just increased it to 48.52fps!! Can't believe it.

But SLI doesn't combine the card's memory to provide a large total, there is still only 896MB of Vram, however there are two instances of it.

GTA4 is a horribly coded game, I get a max of like 31fps with my set up. Yet Crysis runs at 40fps. I think once I get my Phenom II my FPS will increase a fair amount =]

I'm running with Q6600 and a GTX280 and framerate is good with most settings on highest.
I had consistant rec10 crashes and lower fps until until I went into nvidia control panel and:
1) disable physx
2) set pre-rendered frames to 0
3) set for single-monitor performance mode

No more out of memory errors, and it runs much much smoother. I;ve been able to push draw distance way up and still OK (and some stunning landscapes).

I'd recommend turning down water, reflection and shadows to medium at most. There is no noticable difference during play and it helps quite a lot.
