I can't believe how good Vista x64 is with 4GB memory....

More RAM the better... Check your Mobo allows it though cos many dont.

Vista64 is very nice, I keep throwing it on and the ntaking it off again for whatever reasons. Only last week I went back to XP64, and this time, because it lost my SoundCard, and no matter what I did, it would not see it at all??? - Onboard was fine, but I cant be No Swearing! with that.

The Last time, I ran it for a month and i twas spot on and so I decided to activate it and then before the end of *** day, it was completely dead after it No Swearing! itself half a dozen times, but for that 4 weeks or so, it was fine?

Times before that it was seriously messed up on at least somethign or other, and the first time I ever tried it, it trashed itself within the first hour.

So, on my main PC ( Thats not changed at all in 2 years except for CPU, RAM and HDs ) it has gone from a pile of cack to a very nice setup, but not quite finished-off, so when you say things like people are realising, then half of that must be such things as updates, because I used to say Vista is poor, I now say the other way round, even though on my No1 PC I still have not been able to run it fully for longer than a month, I have it running just fine on my No5 and my No.6 PCs ( Showing off now )

I think with any Microsoft operating system you're going to depend on hotfixes from the release date and we've had slagging of XP for a while until SP2 was released for it.

At the moment I like Vista other than UAC so hopefully SP1 will reduce the amount of requirements that UAC gives us. Also, as a Linux user I think of UAC like the sudo command so it isn't as bad as everyone makes out, which I think is due to everyone being used to running as administrator mode.

Games and other applications seem to run well. :)

Found that it was my external backup drive that was causing the lockups :o Just got to finish setting up and install my exrtra memory:) and onboard sound:( better than no sound I hope:D

Why only Microsoft operating systems? Any internet connected OS is going to be on a constant drip feed of hot fixes... the only way of seperating the men from the boys is how seamlessly those hot fixes are applied to the end user systems.

I'd reckon that the majority of people who are constantly slating vista are those who can't run it pirated and aren't willing or able to pay for a license.

Yeah, that and the linux lovers....

lol @ them, they install it....then wonder....What can i actually do with it?

(nothing wrong with it, but you gotta know what your doing!)

You know the people who spell ms as m$

Don't entirely agree with you there. I use linux for a lot of things, it can do pretty much everything except play games and does many things better.

Linux is not perfect but the fact that there is a free, open source operating system is great, and becoming much more popular every year. I use windows on my home pc, primarily because I share with my girlfriend and occasionally play games. That doesn't mean I don't hate with a fiery passion the dominance that microsoft has of computer operating systems. I wholly believe open source to be the future of home computing.

I've used vista x86 with 512mb and 1gb of ram. and Vista x64 with 1gb, 2gb and 4gb.

All I can say is 4gb has to be the sweetspot considering prices of DDR2 nowerdays. For a new build i really wouldn't consider getting any less.

nope i haven't changed or updated the bios..... i would understand if at post it say 3.3gb but it doesn't, it got the full 4gb...

Try enabling memory remapping in the BIOS?

I agree completely with the OP... picked up 2GB of that absurdly cheap OCZ RAM from OcUK, so decided to install 64-bit Vista Ultimate to take advantage of my 4GB.

Part of this is undoubtedly the 'new install effect', but Vista x64 SP1 with 4GB seems so fast and stable. The PC seems to take everything I throw at it with barely any lag at all... reinstalling all my apps was incredibly fast. Might pick up a WD Raptor for a system drive... with a second HD for the OS I reckon I could pretty much eliminate what little slowdown remains.

Bringing this one back from the grave, but for the last 6 months I have been running Vista64

3 days ago, I went back to XP64 and I have found that I actually miss Vista ?

Now, on day 1 I was actually annoyed with myself and day 2 I was better and day 3 and XP64 has settled into a routine now and its smoothed out, but I relly do feel that Vista was just getting better and better with maturity and the longer I left it on the PC, the better it got.

Annoyingly, I sold my only copy of Vista 64 and Vista 32 I have on 3 other PCs Id rather do without to be honest, but I am now going to buy Win7-x64 as soon as I can.

I still have XP on my laptop because it's quite old and the Vista drivers aren't so good. These days XP just annoys me. I particularly miss Vista's start menu.

Whatever you do, don't use event viewer if you don't want to see a slowdown! Takes an age to sort items and can sit there for nearly 30seconds when trying to bring up certain records.

Never seen any boost at all in trying to use a Flash Drive for readyboost?

I did however knock up a test PC with 2GB and then knocked it down to 512MB and it was greatful with readyboost then, but at 2GB or above, I feel its a total waste of time.

The point so many of us have been making over the past few years/months about how good Vista is has just been proven (again:))

People are so influenced by the initial reviews/opinions that are given for a product. I bet most of the people that hate Vista for some strange reason haven't even tried SP1.

The whole issue of ervice packs are a hurdle that many ( ANd I must include myself on that one ) are so hell bent on hating an O/S

XP was the biggie and that came into its own with SP2
With Vista, too many people were saying that it will be ok with SP1 and for many, this was simply not good enough... Not now and not given the ammount of time that MicroSoft had to make sure it was right.
Vista SP2 is right around the corner already and this is yet another reason that so many are still scared of it... If SP1 was so good, why SP2 so soon? - you can see why people are worried.

I hate Vista, out of the box, but once its tweaked ( i.e. all teh vista junk removed ) its the most perfect O/S to date from MS and I only have issues witha very small number of programs compared to XP64, which thankfully runs 100% of what I need it to.

I have also had a play with a beta of W7 and quite frankly, Im hooked.

I only played with it a day and in that small ammount of time, I saw it was leagues ahead of Vista... Kind of like Vista with all the best bits made sleeker, but the bad bits all taken out.

No driver problems etc yet, just a few annoying things like the "Games Explorer". I like to have my games in different folders according to genre not just plonked in one big folder

Slightly off topic, but you must have a fair few games if you're sorting them by genre lol...

Encouraged me to try x64 on my next reinstall which is about due next month. Assume firefox, office, winamp, WoW (<------ Important lol) will all run fine?
