Was transferring a file, half way through everything froze and had to reboot.

The drive is no longer displayed in My Computer.

Heres a screenshot of Disk Management. What is the message coming up - what do I do? You can see the drive below - its the 931GB Unknown unallocated disk.

Thanks

However, I keep getting Vista messages telling me my hard drive is about to fail and to back up my files immediately.

And HD Tune looks like this:

Anyone know what that means as it's down as unknown attribute? And is this enough to get a replacement under warranty?

I've no idea what the "unknown attribute" is, but you could run ES-Tool and see if it shows anything interesting. In any case, I definitely wouldn't trust a drive that's behaving like yours, and a SMART failure is usually considered grounds for replacing a drive under warranty, so I'd go ahead and do the deed if I were you. :)

BACKUP NOW!!

OK, now I've got that out of my system, there is a tool you can download from samsung on their website to test the hard disk via a bootable cd or floppy iirc. If it fails the full test in that, i'd say you have very good evidence it's eligible to be returned. They may well ask you to do that before you return it anyway.

I have about 500GB to back up - the rest is backed up somewhere already. I really need another hard drive before I can do this so I''ll have to buy one and then get a replacement as well. Suppose you can never have too many anyway. Will run those tests now
