Ok im in the market for a new hdd and have decided to get a 500Gb drive
My budget is upto £55 inc vat so i have had a quick look at thoose availeable
on OCuk but cannot decide which one to go for.

I have narrowed it down to a short list of 4 500Gb drives and 1 640Gb drive as it falls within budget.

Drive 1 Hitachi Deskstar

Drive 2 Samsung Spinpoint

Drive 3 Segate Barracuda

Drive 4 Western digital

Drive 5 Samsung Spinpoint F1 640Gb

The main use of the drive is to transfer all of my Video Music and other Downloads on to from three other drive's
firstly in order to install Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit from my current 32bit version
After this the drive will then just be used to store my Music and Videos

So i would like the drive to be reliable which makes me think i should rule out the Hitachi Deskstar as i remember having a couple of major problems with these before i went to Sata around the time they where called Deathstars due to thier failure rate
However this may have changed since then as for Seagate and Western Digital i have had a few of thier drives both Pata and Sata and found them both to be equally as good although i think the Western Digitals where a little bit noisier than the Seagate's which is also something i am trying to rule out as well. I would like the drive to be a quiet as possible.
Samsung Spinpoints i have never used any of these drives at all but from a lot of the post's i read around the forum i believe they are one of the most recommened as for speed sound and relialbility.

Other info you may need to help me choose
My system is in the ON position 24/7 (except when cleaning out the dust bunnies)so the drive has to be able to cope with this
I currently have 2 x maxtor 320Gb drives in Raid 0 as boot drive Running Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit
1 maxtor 300Gb drive as backup storage.
2x 160Gb maxtor drives 1 as storage and 1 running Windows XP Pro

Video is handeled by a nvidia 9800 GX2 with a Nvidia 8800 GTS 320 Mb for Physix
The system runs F@H 24/7 across the the GPU's
Cpu is AMD 4400+ X2 939 (will be changed to a Phenomn ii 720 BE shortly)
Mobo is Nforce 4 SLi based chipset
PSU is Silverstone Strider 750 so power not an issue.
Memory Muskin Redline XP4000 2Gb (but have another 1Gb of this which i will use when i get Vista 64 bit installed untill i update the CPU and mobo)

ive just bought a seagate 500Gb at auction for £35 inc delivery! :)
For the price i cant really complain! lol should arrive next week

I've always found the WD to be quiet drives, they are also the only drives I buy these days so a biased +1 for WD from me.

I have the Segate, no gripes so far and seemingly very quiet. Haven't used it much (or installed much as it's all virgin as of this morning) so time will tell.

My previous drive (the one it replaces) was also a Seagate and I thrashed the guts out of it for 3 years solid, maybe 4. It got thrown around a lot, was noisy, clunked all the time and made a horrendous screech every now and then as the heads hit the platters and never got any care - but it kept going and I only retired it to prevent it self-destructing and destroying everything :)
