HAHAHAHAHAHA! WOOHOOO!!! (got the keys to a new place)

yep, do you have much work to do sp interior related?

Nothing a few pounds of napalm won't sort. Rip out a snot load of wood panelling, T&G, brick effect hardboard, varnished cork tiles, etc ...

You are going to need a skip or two.
...binmen won't take that lot!

Once i've knocked it down most of it is going to be used to level out the different levels of the garden, right now no two areas have the same floor level.

Congrats on the new place; just what were the previous owners doing in the back yard, and why did the landlord let them get away with it?

This is a house he's just bought, previous folks there were the owners.

So have you bought the place or are you renting it? If you are renting it, shouldn't the landlord pay for sorting the garden and building?

The interior only needs a some tidying and a lick of paint to be in a rentable condition, it wouldn't be pretty, but it would be rentable, we just want to do it to our tastes. He has said he'll be sending a couple of labourers to go through the back yard when i need them, but i'll be doing things to my our tastes again. He's one of those "flexible" landlords, forget the rent for a few weeks while you'r decorating and doing the stuff he would have to pay contractors for. Saves him money and we get things how we want them.

I would have thought the same. Is there anything to stop him kicking you out after a year (or however long the minimum contract is) when you've transformed the garden and house?

I've rented from the family on & off for about 9 years and they're friends of my dad so i'm fairly safe (touch wood!)

Wow, that rear garden really does look like a zoo! :D

Was chatting to the neighbours and they had 3/4 dogs and a dozen parots

So you rented from this guy before and had serious issues with the property physically falling apart around you, he spent two years dithering and eventually decided to kick you out by selling it to his son? And now you've decided to rent from him again? Are you mad?!

My fault for the confusion in the OP. I initially rented from the dad and once the building started to fail he sold it on to his son, who has now bought another house to shut me up. Doesn't sound so bad when i put it that way :)

Door to the 4th bedroom is closed off with shelving giving the master bedroom a REALLY big walk-in wardrobe!

Haven't got a key for the back door, so i'm going to have to drill it out, but apart from that everything unlocks (there are 6 bunches of keys there!)

Tomorrow will be empty the loft day. Hoping to get all the "hidden" junk from the house itself downstairs for when the labourer shows up with a trailer on tuesday. Or i might drag it all out to the back garden and burn it. :D

Either way i'm getting a tetanus booster.

Weren't you the guy who had 'Dave' a Lister engine which you ran on cooking oil to power your house electrics? - or am I thinking of someone else?

As for the house, I'll look out for you in something like 'Cash In The Attic' :D

Glad you've finally got somewhere, but I have to ask...

In all those years living in cramped and / or collapsing flats, with no action from your landlord, why on earth didn't you look elsewhere for accomodation? I don't know where exactly you are, but I've lived in four different cities and I've never had to look for more than a few days to find a decent place...

Why is it you had to go through the same bloke (his son, whatever) rather than trying out the market?

Happy days :D

I'll be on something more like "rogue traders" with complaints about flytipping ;)

We did spend a few months looking around at other properties and found a few nice ones, and then they wanted to run a credit check .....

Congrats to you - looks like you have your work cut out for you!! Specially with little ones running around!
The g/f and I picked up keys to our new place last wkend so we were nice and excited!

Hope you're getting the mates round to help clear the place out?
Congrats anyway, it's nice to hear you're so enthusiastic and not moaning about the amount of work needed.
Good luck! :)

Maybe i'm just being negative, but this still looks all wrong to me. Why should you spend a lot of time and effort doing up a place that's not even yours? You're saving the landlord a huge amount of his money, then once you've got it nice he's going to start charging you a fortune to live in it. Not only that but what's to stop him turning round and saying "thanks very much" and kicking you out? After all he could probably get 25% more rent out of some other schmuck once it's all cleared. He should have sorted it out for you before renting it; for god's sake it's his job as the landlord. It's not even in a liveable state judging from the pictures.

I'm honestly not trying to rain on anyones parade but it really looks like this could end badly. My instincts are telling me this is all wrong and the landlord is simply taking advantage of your optimism and willingness ot get your hands dirty for him. From my experiences of landlords they are never to be trusted and will always pull a fast one if they see an opportunity to cut a corner or get more money. Having said that, good luck with the project though, and i hope it all works out for you.

I understand what you're saying and if i was new to this landlord i'd run a mile, but i've done work on flats with him before and nothing has gone wrong.

thats not an answer fella :p
how much once he starts asking for money?

He said he'll be looking for £700-800pcm, which after looking at the other places to let around here is pretty good, this one has offroad parking and what will be a good sized garden.

Was a bad day today, we took some casualties :(

Been with me for many many years, went down fighting though. <sob>

£800 :/
glad you are happy paying that, I wouldn't be (given we are paying £800 a month for our place at the moment!)
