the new Skyscraper in Dubi .. ( have a look )

As someone said earlier, Dubai's a pretty 'empty' place. I don't understand why they have so many hotels, offices and residential buildings when they're mostly empty. Firstly, their summer is far too hot. Secondly, there's little employment there. Thirdly, it has no economy. They have no oil, and are relying on tourism. Yet, this is going to dry up, because it's not particularly cheap to go there, or be there. It really is a mystery why they're over-developing so much.

its expensive now as they are working on essentially building up a Vegas a like town, as in lots of over the top buildings. Essentially at this stage its like they've built all the most expensive hotels in Vegas, which cost an arm and a leg to stay in the suites for a week. Once they've built a ton more they'll start building the motel 6 type rat traps a little futher out from the main stuff and "budget" Dubai will be born with lots of visitors every week. IS gambling legal there? if not expect it to become so at some stage.

Afaik the money situation in Dubai isn't that great for a lot of the companies building, but they are at that, "if we stop now we're screwed" stage so are still pumping cash in.

They can and will make themselves into a good destination most likely. But things take time, Vegas didn't go up overnight either and it took a heck of a lot of cash to get going too, now it rakes in so much cash its obscene, and a very very popular holiday destination, even without the sea and real beaches, they just built some.

Difference is VEGAS was built just as near to LA as you can legally get because most american states you can't gamble.

America already has vegas and in Europe you can gamble in all countries so where are the tourists going to come from? Other oil rich states?

Last time I checked there was wealth but it was only a fraction of 1% that had it. Also when I was in Vegas there were A LOT of empty rooms I just wonder if there is even enough to go round the hotels there.

That's something that always confused me as well. What is the point of building so many hotels & flats in the desert. People are going to need stuff to do they should really focus on getting that Disney styled theme park open. They'd probably need to relax their laws on women too, with the heat it'd make a great beach resort.

Large shopping malls, larger skyscrapers, mad drivers, expensive cars, building sites, expensive boats, immigrant works by the thousand

Best thing we saw when we were there last January was when we went out into the desert (hired a 4x4), got stuck, and a friendly arab blokey came and pulled us out. He then invited us over to his mates who had taken their pet birds of prey out for a play, they posed for us, and put on a bit of a show for us - getting the birds to catch doves in mid air, after racing at insane speeds in their Landcrusiers across the sand. Bleedin show offs!

Oh, and we found camel bones too!

Thats so cool. One of the only things I like about the middle east is their skill in falconry.
