Torn between Caviar Black and Caviar Green

If you want performance, get the black. If you want quietness, but don't mind a lack of performance, get the green. The energy saving won't really be significant, unless you're getting twenty of them...

Yeah the green uses about 6-7 watts the black uses around 16-19 watts it's neglible.

Go for WD black.

Thanks well I have a 500gb green already and it's fast enough for storage so I'll probs go with the quitness.

Now how noisy is the black

Thanks greenlizard guess I'll go w/ the blacks then :D

Aye, fit them well and you shouldn't hear them at all. I haven't looked at the price, but since it's for storage then you may as well just get the cheapest.

Yeah just read a review "If the Caviar Black has a weakness, it's the drive's noise levels. The Black ties for the loudest terabyte we've tested at idle, where it's a good three decibels louder than Western Digital's own GreenPower drives. Under a seek load, the Black is at least quieter than the Deskstar, but it's still louder than most of the pack. "

Going green, my pc is right next to me on my desk so it needs to be quiet.

Just another point that hasnt been raised yet, the black has a 5 year warranty and the green has a 3 year warranty, big difference in my view, if this wasnt the case id go for green for storage.

Good point, I have one of each, Black for OS, Green for storage, they are in a shuttle so quiet is good for me and I can't say there is all that much difference between the 2.

Argh I was set on green now I'm not sure again. In 3 years time 1TB will be dead cheap anyways so 5 year warranty doesn't matter? Dunno :/

You have a point but I myself will probably keep these 2 in for more than 3 years and might not fill them, the difference is £8 for an extra 2 year warranty, if your green fails after 4 will you be happy paying out for a new one, even if they go down to £50, the extra £8 is worth it tbh.
