The end of mainstream Sci-Fi

Maybe if you had actually asked that question instead of flat out staing it was the end of mainstream SciFi you'd have got an answer to it which would have been:

No, I don't, it's in a shocking state in comparison and I hope that it doesn't stay in the pit it is currently in, but it is not the end of it.

As for the differing genres within SciFi, yes space based is lacking which is a sad thing, but it'll only be a matter of time before there is something new.

Blimey! You haven't half got a bee in your bonnet over this Dano.

There's not that much of a difference in asking whether "it's the end of mainstream Sci-Fi" and you saying "it's in a shocking state, currently in the pits".

I too bemoan the loss of SG1 and Atlantis, and fear the SGU won't go far. BSG I was never over keen on funnily enough, but I was still sad to see it go. Star Trek is missing, I presume dead, unless the movie kickstarts it again, and Star Wars has gone animated FFS! I can therefore fully understand the opinion of the OP. Yes there are differing types of Sci-Fi, but those I've mentioned are a genre in themselves. And they're all gone! :(

So Terminator Sarah Conner chronicles is about to be canned? Shame that Cause I really think its a great show.

We've still got the live action Star Wars tv series to come out in the next year and a bit. Not that I trust Lucas with even being allowed to touch projects although it's supposed to be aimed at an older audience. Fingers crossed that it's actually going to be alright.

I saw someone here earlier mention a possible reworking of Buck Rogers. I hadn't even heard about that although I was wondering if they'd do that. Good news. I loved the original although it's a shame they can't just go back in time, grab the tasty looking Erin Gray and stick her in again.;)

Sarah Connor Chronicles is "set for chop" ever since it arrived and so far Prison Break which was main show on the same evening was officially told to wrap up and T:TSCC is still going ahead. You have to remember there is licensed merchandise behind it with three movies comming across next few years. Whatever happens on the show (like introducing factor of Cammeron being always next to John in the future) has impact on story line of the movies.

Well, there should be a Star Wars tv series next year according to Lucas and co.

They're talking of doing like 400 one hour episodes that'll eventually split into four different series...

I'm pretty sure they are ignoring the show for the films and likewise.

As for the OP, Sci-Fi is not dead.

Its a shame so little Sci fi is made, as its must be one of the most successful genres, look at Star Wars and Star Trek they must be the 2 most successful productions ever and still command a loyal following.

Farscape is one of my favorite series, the guy who wrote that has one wild imagination. :)

There are talks of a new Star Trek series, if the movie is a success we might see a new series :):):):)

There's plenty of Sci-Fi still out there, but most of it is carp.

theres always been very good shows on at the same time, generally making a new one while several are in full swing is the key to failure. Shows end, others start, thats how it goes. There will be 10 pilots for new sci fi shows in the summer, 5 won't even finish being made, 3 will make it to air and only one will be good, thats how it goes. In a couple years there will be 3 more sci fi shows going strong.

Hopefully new series will be produced in the future. The success of the re-runs must show there's a great demand for this genre.

I can kind of agree with the OP although I think the 'sci fi' definition used was probably not the best. 'There isn't any decent space based sci fi series anymore' would probably have been more accurate.

Things like babylon 5 crusade (a follow on to b5) got canned due to low ratings, the lost tales was stopped due to budget constraints (warner brothers wouldn't pay out enough for it to be decent) and there hasn't been a star trek series for ages. Farscape was lucky to get finished off with the peacekeeper wars, andromeda went rubbish after season 3 and LEXX is unlikely to be continued anytime soon as it was never really mainstream enough to start with (I enjoyed it though) and serenity was canned due to the usual lack of numbers - maybe theres a reason for this (timeslots anyone).
BSG has run its course and stargate is basically dead in the water as I doubt universe will last long but I hope to be proven wrong.

The current trend for sci fi based on super powers ala heroes, mutant x, sarah connor chronicles all seem to get a bit dull after the first series. I enjoy watching summer glau but even she can't keep me entertained (well she could but she's not with me when its showing :() if the story is dead boring.
Theres been other things like the new knight rider (I actually enjoyed it strangely) or sanctury (which was ok until sg1's Samantha Carter spoke english badly) and of course theres the 'sci fi' on terrestrial channels - primeval (only good for hannah spearitt), doctor who (getting bored now) and the soon released triffids.

Part of the problem is TV stations are only after the quick buck now adays instead of looking at the big picture, the likes of Star Trek, Babylon 5 and BSG have brought in a large chunk of their profits from dvd sales but unfortunately the current batch of TV execs are a bit dumb and can't see the bigger picture sadly.

And it would be nice for a space based sci fi show to replace some of these rubbish shows (dancing on ice while singing karaoke etc) which seem all the rage now due to their 'high ratings' (maybe its cos nothing else is on!).

Star Wreck in the Pirkinning - hell thats better than some of the drivel we get on the bbc :) although I do prefer the ships when they're more based on the original series rather than the remade models.
