Western Digital Enters SSD Arena

they will probably stop development on raptors i reckon, not much point now that SSD's beat it in every single area.

Lets hope they mass produce these and bring them out cheaper than ocz vertex and maybe ever better performance. vertex with firmware 1275 is an impressive drive but 60gb is £191, i'd never pay more than £105 for a 60gb SSD so still a long way from being of good value, lets hope WD will help speed the pricedrops up:)

SuperTalent’s UltraDrive ME uses the same controller as the OCZ Vertex, lets hope ocuk add this soon, it looks like it will be the same speed as the vertex when using the same 1275 firmware, lets hope its cheaper.

Hopefully they've been waiting for the technology to get better and whatever products they bring out will be good performers and trouble-free.

I also am hoping this is the case. I've never had a WD go wrong on me. yet. **touches the wood on his desk again***

They will probably still make raptors. They'll use the name as an SSD. It's like the Intel Pentiums still sold atm, they're not the original Pentium. It's the brand name that Intel have carried on using and WD will probably be no different with the Raptor.

yeah, i meant harddrives tho ie 10k/15k/20krpm drives, i reckon they'll cancel those. SSD is just too fast and they are already getting towards a decent price. I reckon they only bought out the company when they saw the reviews on the OCZ Vertex and saw that it wasn't using a ****ed up controller anymore and it beat raptors in virtually every test. The way things are going they might have sata3 600/500mb/s 256gb drives for £200 in 12months and a traditional hdd raptor even @ 20krpm would be left dead in the water.

PCI-E ssd's coming out too from OCZ and the infamous Fusion I/O, its an exciting time.

I personally wont be upgrading before Sata3 ssd's are out, maybe even pci-e ssd's. No point buying a vertex with a 2x faster vertex2 sata3 drive out in 1 month or so.

Good news indeed, that`s at least the second major name to heavily invest in SSD`s. Testement to how quickly SSD`s are gathering pace.

I feel like dancing :D
