Well, I managed to get a GTX285 for £270 delivered new and sold my 8800GTX for £80...

I would like some affirmation from fellow ocuk members on if I have done the right thing lol...:o

Thanks for any "feel good posts" :p

bad move! im joking - I went from a heavily OC'd 8800GTS (G92) to a GTX 280 and what an amazing difference. I know its not exactly the same card but its pretty close - enjoy ur card man!

Same move i made recently myself, the gtx was a very nice upgrade from the gts, which was starting to struggle at 1920x1200.

Otherwsie, that gtx 285 will certainly be a nice upgrade.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

It was a tough decision because the 4870X2 can be had for just over £300. I'm sure that it has a higher resale value but I just didn't want to go with 2 GPUs...

Not sure if that was a good\bad idea, but just like I don't like the "Wii" games console and everyone else in the world does. I can't stand the thought of a dual GPU graphics card.

...

Still I'm sure I'll love it, and hopefully it can get me back into gaming again :)

Well I went for a GTX260 216 55nm at £145 and overclocked it to 780/1572 which puts it between a 280 and 285 so i;m happy :D

Was a pretty good deal you done mate i would be happy with £190 plus a 8800gtx for a gtx285. If you don't like dual gpu setups then you got the fastest single gpu on the market which will be a very nice upgrade performance wise.

Could have got a better deal by going for a GTX 260 216SP for £150. That would have only cost you £70 and would equal 85% of GTX 285 performance with a little overclocking.

Yep you've got the best single-gpu card, nice upgrade. I'm thinking similar myself but keep swaying towards dual-gpu, but I'm still not fully convinced by SLI/XFire in terms of stability and with the problems like micro-stuttering etc.

Single-gpu still looks like the best for stability.

What were your reasons for not going with two gpus, just out of interest? I'm trying to decide what to replace my 8800 GTX with.

heh heh I'm not mad on the WII either, I kept hearing how great it was but when I finally played it I just thought the graphics looked very basic.

lol on the Wii :)

My reasons were the following, in this order...

1. 4870X2 has lower "lowest" frame rates in benchmarks, this is a serious concern to me. It means that when it really matters the frame rate will drop stupidly low regardless of the extremely high average frame rates. This would make the drop even more noticable and stuttery. (This is an assumption).

2. Power Supply, I only have a 600W OCZ PowerStream, it has 1 x PCIE 6Pin connector and NO 8Pin connector. I know this could be rectified by using my current 6pin connector + my curent 2 x molex -> 6pin connector to make 1 x 8pin connector and then use a 2 x molex connector which would be included with the 4870X2 to make another 6pin connector...Something about doing all that doesn't sit too well with me though. I have full faith in my PSU but I wouldn't be surprised I've my PSU would start to make that high pitched noise a PSU makes when it's pumping out watts for its life.

3. Compatibility. It's all well and good playing games that are optimised fully with zero bugs, but there will inevitably be some that don't or can't be optimized for the dual GPU setup. These games would run only a tiny bit better than my current 8800GTX and the difference wouldn't be noticable to any degree. Certainly not £300+ worth.

4. Microstutter. I have had YEARS of annoying stuttering issues and they are seriously annoying. I remember the old days playing FarCry 1. Unless you had 2GB of RAM, it was a given that you got stutter. Then there was Half Life 2, that stuttered with nVidia cards for a long time (I never fully rectified the problem on my 6800GT).

5. Heat. I've only just got my box setup, and it's on the edge in terms of heat lol.

6. More expensive, £50 more expensive although I suspect resale value of the 4870X2 to be much better proportinately than a GTX285 so that's neither here nor there really.

7. I haven't owned an ATI sorry I mean AMD ;) for a while now, not since the 9800 Pro and I see the GTX285 as the logical upgrade. (not a very valid reason but it makes me feel better lol)

So those are my reasons :)

I'm not sure but maybe those reasons aren't fully valid\outdated\me being ignorant. I honestly don't know.

Anyway, thanks for all the replies, it looks like even if I have made the "wrong" decision, it won't have been by too much hopefully and each have their pro's and cons.

Good point on the lowest frame rate, I tend to focus on the average. Yeah I'm still not sold on dual-gpus, looks like 285 or 4890 for me.

Hows your card going dude? (Yes the Wii does suck lol) I'm looking (still) to upgrade my BFG GTX 8800. I also have a 600w psu and don't want to upgrade that aswell this time round (Seasonic s12 600W). I'm tempted by the BFG GTX285 OC2 and then sell my BFG 8800 OC2 as you did. Looks to be about the best option out there without lots of overclocking, upgrading my psu also, or going dual gpu's (unless I've missed another high end release that will run on my psu):)
