Nearly totalled a 106

You had a mk2 MX5 didn't you? ;)

But then again, they are light cars with not much powaaaaar.

Yeah and a mk2 has either 255mm or 270mm front vented discs. Then they have solid discs at the rear, in 251mm and 276mm respectively.

Not sure what you are getting at.

Mx5's have always had front vented discs, even when first released in 89, though it was only 235mm then.

The speed I approach roundabouts I can stop at the line even with cooked brakes.

Change the pads, fluid, disks if needs be, and make sure they're not sticking.

A single stop from 70mph, in any car, even a Rover 400, should not cook the brakes IMO...

Something has probably failed or is close to failure.

:o Ballsack lol, just got vented confused with drilled :/

On a car as heavy as the 400, solid discs are crap, no question.
Some facts coming up here.
A 400 is 100kg more then the new mx5.
A 400 is slightly lighter then a mr2 mk2.

ABS is not designed to stop you quicker. It’s designed to stop you safely.

If you value your life don’t use ECB.

On the roads you should have your licence revoked before you need the cooling capacities of vented disks.

Cross drilled disks. Bad idea! The pad comes round and lifts the corner of the hole up.

Then that part of the disk is more pronounced then the rest of the disk, wears the pad more In that area. Meaning less pad to disk contact. Therefore less friction.

Also the possibility of failure of the disk is introduced by creating another stress point

I'll ignore the rest of your waffle, but seriously, WTF?

I've managed to completely cook the brakes on my saxo VTR, without driving dangerously in the slightest.

Continued and prolonged amounts of spirited driving can quite quickly cook brakes without license revoking speeds or stupidity.

I drive with enough spirit to get 40odd MPG out of a 2l diesel, but only where safe.

The discs are apparently different thicknesses for vented and solid, so balls to swapping calipers and stuff :p

So what are the best pads to make the most of my naff discs?

Seriously, replace the discs too!

Don't you realise that you probably experienced brake fade. That is from your brakes overheating, which just changing pads won't cool down the brakes at all. And if they are overheating that easy, then you may overheat uprated pads too. Vented will help a lot, it isn't exactly that much. And in that case just get ZS180 set for £120.

It's also not just brake pads and discs that help braking, tyres and suspension also aid braking performance!

An old Rover on stock springs and wheels is going to EXzibit a lot of YO DAWG I HERD U LIKE NOSE DIVING etc!

You sound worse than my mates in their VTR's.
Nothing useful to add though.
Then **** off. This isn't some boy racer thread, this is about brakes being inadequate. Sadly VTRs have eough braking power, hence people driving them like clowns.

Read the thread, I have T1Rs on the front. :)

Edit: Will grooved discs be better cooled than solids, or does that purely affect the braking characteristics?

Just read this thread, people like you kill people, cool it down on the road, want to drive like that, go on a track day.

This ^^

There is NOTHING wrong with the design of these brakes. He does not need uprated discs, calipers, water cooled 6 pots or anything of the sort.

To boil/fade that quickly either the pads are wafer thin and about to give up, or the fluid has totally had it. It needs maintenance, not upgrading.

I had no problems when I had one wafer thin pad and one none existant pad on the front driver's side of the 328i, and I did some harsh braking with it like that, so my best guess is just continuous harsh braking, or as someone said, a sticky calliper which resulted in cooked brakes.
