**EMPIRE TOTAL WAR**

bar the crashes and bugs, ETW is unfinished big time. MTW2 was not like that and its better looking graphics ran much faster at my PC than the ones which ETW offers. CA would have to do some serious patching to sort this mess out and ill be very surprised if they bother(due to the cost involved).

It will get there, already thanks to the mods, empire is looking fantastic. The textures, smoke, blood, dirt, buildings, shadows and lighting on my Empire look really really nice.

I havent had any crashes, so that in itself should be a sign that whatever is causing the crashes for some people is fixable. The AI when using combined Darthmod and Imperial Splendour mod + Balance of Power mod is pretty good, in fact I actually lost a campaign earlier this week. Thats the first time in any total war that I have actually lost :)

I've really only got 2 issues left that I want resolving

a) Naval Invasions dont work properly - This is apparently due to be fixed shortly
b) The game mechanic whereby once a nation loses its capital , its armies give up. I would rather that the armies have x number of turns to try and regain a foothold. That one will be easily modable once the SDK is available.

Once those 2 are fixed I will consider empire to be the best total war I've played. Even now its already the game I am playing most :)

Out of interest, do you get the delays when clicking on fleets?

Depends what you mean by a delay, usually its as quick as clicking on a land unit for me. Sometimes when I have a stack of a dozen ships I get a delay of around 2 seconds, maybe 3, but not very often.

I'm thinking about getting this game, I have a birthday coming up and I was wondering if it is really worth the £30.

Is it really as buggy as people have said?
The other problem I have is that although I've played medieval total war 2 and Rome total war I still always go back to Civ4. The other total war games just didn't have enough depth to keep me interested for too long...that and I didn't understand a fair few factors in governing cities.
So, is it worth getting?

I often get delays, or more recently it seems that any first rate fleets go into crashy crashy mode after their first turn of moving if i lick them (currently stuck with 2 good sized fleets with armies on board that i can't even scuttle).

Yeah i had that Were and it is annoying as hell knowing you have good fleets and armies costing you a lot of cash and you cannot use them. As of latest patch i am able to play but clicking end turn results in a ten minute wait for my turn again so still not really playable at the minute.

Its definately causing problems for a lot of people, even though I myself havent had any problems I would still recommend that you wait for a few more patches to come out. Particularly given your uncertainty about the game anyway.

I think its a superb game, but thats pretty much only because of the mods I use and the fact that I havent had any problems running the game. a lot of people have, and theres a good chance you will too. Its a rough diamond at the moment which in time will shine for everyone instead of just the lucky few.

I think it may be a little longer in regards to the time frame before this game fulfills its potential :p

I've had Rome and Med 2 total war since their release dates, and although they had their niggles when they were released, they were no where near as bad as Empire on release

Damn. I didn't realise it was as bad as this!! :(

Damn 2. :(:(

I am playing MTWII mods daily, because they run so sweet on my Dell Inspiron :D I hope it does get sorted. Would be a shame to ruin the franchise with a lousy release. Is it really that bad??

I tried the demo, and the one thing I noticed straight away - it ran like a dog. Admittedly I had the settings more or less maxed out. So I put it down to that. But I haven't the interest in this that I have in Medieval.

Well perfromance in the main game is way way better.

Also, MTWII on release was as bad as empire. If you think it wasn't then you didn't play it enough. I shudder at the thought of some of the bugs.

Either way, Empire is still a good game!

Yes I often get the long pauses when selecting ships. I have also had a fair few crashes to the desktop at the end of battles. This is updated to the latest patch. Other than that it is an addictive game apart from the fact that I am useless at the game and can never seem to build up money and the technology research takes ages to do research just one tech (4-5 turns). Is there a tech or building that improves the research rate? The lack of manual is quite annoying.

M2TW was the worse of the two releases, in my opinion.

M2TW I basically couldn't play when it was released and I don't think Creative Assembly ever really fixed the fact that my cavalry wouldn't charge :D but apart from a few annoying (but not game-breaking) little bugs, Empire TW has been good for me. I believe it's a superior game - lots of the chaff has been sifted out and some nice new little things introduced. I also think they've done a reasonably good job of designing a game around the musket, but keeping the whole Total War theme. Yes, I have concerns about some things, but this is a game, not an historical simulation :D

When it comes to money, trade is king.

Here's a little tip - if you don't mind being sneaky: In my Ottoman campaign, I was really struggling for cash. I put together a few fleets over the course of five years or so - lots of brigs and half a dozen trade ships. I scoured the trade theatres until I found all the points the United Povinces had. I left a trade ship near each one and then invaded UP with all the land forces I could muster. I captured Amsterdam and all her ships and colonies disappeared into the wind (capturing all of a European powers provinces in Europe means they're gone!). Ok, I lost a few ships in the process and ended up at war with GB, but what the hell! This left her trade spots open and I steamed in. I was making a fortune shortly afterwards (and once I'd made peace with GB!).

As for research, your best option is to have multiple places of learning. And if you thought 4 or 5 turns per tech was bad, wait until you get further along.....

Oh, and move Gentlemen into your schools - they speed up research.

Do'h! Another new bug since this latest patch! Never had any real major graphics glitches since release of the game. However I'd just played a battle with no sounds, until I clicked the fast foward button, which caused a machine gun of all the selection sounds I'd made during deployment.

After I'd won the silent battle, i was greeted by the slightly barren and warped looking campaign map :p

How in the hell can people think medieval 2 looked better?

Empire looks fantastic in my opinion. CA broke the game for a few days with that sound thing but the 30th of march patch fixed it for me. Really enjoying the road to independence campaign at the moment. Gonna start a campaign when thats done. I would probably like a bit more performance but i guess i will just have to shell out on a new 4890 or gtx 275 to witness it playing silky smooth.

What mods would people recommend graphically and gameplay wise?

A great mod!

Also, I laugh at anyone who say Medieval 2 looked better...buy a better computer!

What mods would people recommend graphically and gameplay wise?

Darthmod + Quixotes Mod (now called Imperial Splendour) - Best used together by creating your own tailor made mod from the two

PIPmod

Smoke mod as linked above

Turns per year mod - if you like longer campaigns like me :)

Infua Music mod

Slower mod - Again best to tailor the mod to your own wants.

British Army graphics mod

Russian army graphics mod

Prussian army graphics mod

French army graphics mod (incorporating post-revolution uniforms)

Spanish army graphics mod

United Provinces graphics mod

LOD4 graphics mod

Leather UI mod

Fife and Drums mod and Sound FX mod (same guy who did Smoke mod)

Those are the mods I am currently using, graphics look incredible, game plays far FAR better than the standard game.
