For my new system (ordering tomorrow) I have a choice between a velociraptor 300gb or a 120gb ssd (OCZ 2.5" 155MB/sr 90MB/sw).

In addition to this I will have 3 x 1tb samsung spinpoints, so the veloci or ssd will be my operating system drive.

I may sound like I know what I'm talking about, but I don't. Which one should I go for and why?

I do my work on my home pc, and it involves using a large sql database.

I assume you mean the OCZ Solid Series SSD? It fits the price, size, reads and writes you say. If so, do not go for that SSD. I think it uses the JMicron controller, which reportedly, is terrible and offers no where near the performance it should do. The Vertex 60GB is a much better choice, and although it's half the storage, with 3TB's, storage is hardly your main concern, and 60GB is plenty for the OS.

If you do not want the 60GB SSD, stick with the velociraptor. I would avoid the Apex and Solid Series OCZ SSD's like the plague, at least for now. There's a reason they offer more storage for the same money.

Thanks guys. this is why I ask for your help. that's my only option as far as SSD are concerned, OCZ solid series, so I'll be going with the velociraptor.

All the more room for me :D

Why is it your only option? Are you getting it built for you? You can ring up OCUK and they will be happy to add the SSD in for you. Failing that, you could always buy the SSD after, as they aren't hard to install, and you'd save some money.

I'm getting it built for me, not by OCUK though (shhh). It will be in a HAF 32 case with an asus pt motherboard. Would it simply be a case of me slotting it in? I can budget up to £50 above a 300gb velociraptor for my OS drive, in that case would you be able to recommend me a SSD?

Btw I did actually try to get OCUK to tweak one of their systems, but sadly my emails didn't get answered nor did my forum topic so I gave up lol. No biggie to me, they lose my £2k of sales. :)

Yeah, it is as simple as slotting it in the HDD bay, and plugging the SATA cable into the motherboard. You'll have to set the boot drive, and install the OS (the bonus of this is that you get to keep the OS key for yourself, so you can reformat in the future), but that's easy.

At OCUK, the vertex 60GB is actually £20 cheaper than the 300GB velociraptor. If you can spare the space, and are willing to have a crack at putting it in yourself, the reduction in noise and speed increase will be more than worth it.

thanks a lot, appreciate the advise. I do like quieter things which I one reason why I went for the HAF case.

I don't own a raptor (nor do I own an SSD, or a 3.5" HDD for that matter, I'm still stuck with my laptop right now), but people do seem to mention the noise they put out. If you are aiming for a quiet build, the velociraptor is probably not the best choice.

Plus with having a smaller drive as your boot drive, you will be less inclined to store stuff on it, and you'll get faster bootups and such as a result.
