Court Summons :'(

I'm never sure why people post this sort of thread on here. I know you're honestly looking for advice, but here isn't the place to find it unless you want to be judged by people and told you're a fool by others. You'd be better off asking people on the street imo.

Probably the CAB as suggested already is your best bet. Best of luck to you in sorting it out.

Sounds like you've been a bit lazy mate or suffering lazy depression bouts.... Leaving bills to one side etc etc.

Heh I'm guilty of that too, paid plenty of late fees dispite having the cash :)

However fair play on you for posting here and enduring the wolves. Just take a deep breath and get on with it. Don't email them - get your arse down to their office first thing in the morning and get it sorted.

There are some tools on here, but also people who have been in the same situation etc.

Fiar enough GD isn't the best place at the worst of times, but if you havn't got anythign constructive to say the back button is at the top left of your browser, a big arrow it is.

its also worth mentioning that getting a job at asda or whatever can sometimes be counter productive, not knowing enough about the OP I can't give a definative but for example if I were to lose my job, going to get a full time job in a supermarket on much much less than I'm on now would just slightly prolong the inevitable loss of house/bankruptcy etc whilst sapping all my time to go and find a job on similar remuneration to the one I just lost.

You need to take all the emotion out of this.. basically the OP hasn't got a suitable job at present but there are plenty of safety nets in place to stop non payment of council tax being financially terminal, just go to the CAB asap.

I imagine there are so many breeding dole scum out there not paying, one chap who is actively looking for work won't even register.

Although this is Blaires/Browns broken Britain so I expect unless you get some spurious crutches or similar you might be out of luck.

Bennies don't go for under 3quid here. Shuddering at the thought of mayfairs *puke*

Then again he could be buying rollies

Go to tesco and they will be under £3.

Mayfair are not that bad, the worst are dorchester and Benson Gold superkings.

Rollies are also nice, bar Drum and/or other shag brands.

But i digress...you are incorrect.

I dont want this to come out wrong....

... but you cant afford to pay council tax, yet you have a pc, an internet connection, and are using the electricity to power said pc....

Come on m8 - he could have a free internet connection via Sky or have paid in for a year's connection up front or even be still in contract for his internet connection.

With regards to the smoking, and I mean this in a supportive way, stop already! I know it's addictive and I enjoy the odd cigarette myself, but in your situation this should have stopped a long time ago.

Nottingham City Council? Never trust anything they tell you..

Collect all your documentation together, assuming that you are on JSA of some sort, you should have documentation to support it, take it (dont email/phone) to the treasury office off trinity square and get them to document on their system that you have provided proof of entitlement to benefit. Also take threatening letter with you and say that you want to get it sorted out as best you can. Make sure that you get a printed receipt to say that you have been there.

Oh, and get there early, the place can get packed with scumbags pretty fast.

And good job getting out from the grey depression of lenton lane.

If they're anything like my local council then they are utterly useless. I was put in a situation last year due to various issues that caused me to be landed with an unexpected (I thought I was paying it, but that's my own stupid fault for taking their word that I never needed to think about it if it was on direct debit and had been working as intended for about a decade) council tax bill for over a grand, went down to arrange something to be asked if I had considered downsizing because you know, a one bedroom starter home is such a huuuge place and I really want to move into a bedsit/studio flat over a temporary issue that would never have occured if they could have kept their promise in the first place.

I got one of those

I am a student and sent my exemption form off but they never got it.... gave me a court summon, i re-sent the info and it was all fine but they couldnt take the court summon away for some reason, they said i didnt have to go so i didnt....

Sorry your in a bad position.... maybe get a student to lodge with you and you might get some money off.... prob wont work but good luck

weird .

same happened to 6 of us in our house . i rang them the next day and they happily 'reset' our council tax account and cancelled all the summons . they also posted us out a form to fill in for exemption

OP id either ring them again and hope for a more helpful employee or ring the benefits department to chase them up so they get it paid

Cheers for the advice mate...I take it you use to work for them too then? what department/support role were you in?

one would hope being out of work is only a short term situation, and yes, tv and hifi could go too, they are luxury goods dont forget.

Last time I checked Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda, Morrisions and the like are nearly always recruiting staff. I'd never be too proud to stack shelves to pay towards the bills....

don't kid yourself mate, the only reason i got a job back at sainsburys after losing my previous job (at a different wok place) is because i did a christmas temp job there. and even then i had to wait 2 months after the temp job finished before a vacancy came open.

whilst i was unemployed i tried every supermarket within 1 hours bus ride from my house (one hour there and back) and none where hiring until easter (this was at the beginning of the year after my temp sainsburys job ended).

you can't just walk in to that kind of job at the moment.

@OP, i'm not old enough, or experienced enough to comment on the rub of the situation, but things like fags and alcohol should be dropped IMMEDIATELY until you're back on your feet (and in the case of fags, permanently). luxuries you buy from now on should be for the kids only. when my dad was unemployed after finishing his degree as a mature student (unemployed for best part of a year not for want of trying (literally EVERY job going)) both he and my mum lived of off beans on toast and pasta/rice while still trying to give me and my sister as normal a life as we were used to (my sister never noticed this being 5 at the time, but i saw what they did but never mentioned it until recently).

just cut back, as much as possible until this blows over and it should work out fine in the end

I was told if I offer the council what I can afford to pay each week, then they won't be able to refuse and I won't have to go to court...

If you tell the court that you've offered to pay what you can they will just let you go instantly, you've got nothing to worry about.
