Parkinson: 'Jade Goody was a wretched role model'

Parky has just gone up in my estimations, thank god someone came out and spoke the truth for once!

What's your point? Does that grant her some kind of immunity to criticism? I've not done anything particularly noteworthy during my life but then I doubt I'll get an enormous funeral procession or such ludicrous amounts of media attention either

I can never understand why people defend others on the grounds that their critics are no higher in status than they are.

No it does not make her immune to criticism, I'm all for free speech. However, the media darlings who are making comments about Goody's life are just that - media darlings. So in my eyes their comments about the situation are fairly empty because they have not made a terrific contribution to the world either.

I didn't like Goody, and don't think she was a good role model. Despite that, I don't think that a washed up old celebrity making statements about the situation (and getting paid for doing so) helps anyone. If he had any class he would have said nothing out of respect for her family.

I think the public got caught up by her inadvertantly drawing attention to the smear issue. If she had been hit by a bus and not had cancer, I doubt there would have been much more than a headline or two before it was forgotten.

I had a right row with my Mrs about a month ago over all this, I made the mistake of pointing out she was a nothing that was infamous for being thick and slightly racist, yet she gets Cancer which is a terrible thing and all of a sudden she ****ing Princess Di part deux !

Im not the only one then? My good lady has been totally sucked in by the whole media circus, books, magazines the lot. She honestly believes that Jade was some sort of miracle worker who did great things for raising awareness for cervical cancer. Sad fact is that she did squat bar get the disease, its sad that she died but thats it.

And I'm glad it was him.

I feel sorry for the lass and her kids (wouldn't wish cancer or the loss of a parent on anyone), sure, but there's nothing special about her whatsoever.

I agree.

I am torn on the whole thing. I don't agree with the rather harsh jokes that are going around at the moment - at her expense, however I really can't understand why she became a star.

It reminds me of that woman who was massively popular a few years back because she wasn't able to drive and took part in a TV show. I don't watch enough tv to be able to tell you the show / her name.

Fair play to that man...

Now why can't we get more people speaking up like this about the current state of affairs, surrounding this country.

Not defending anything, just pointing out that all these people who comment on the Goody show probably haven't got much to show for their own existence in reality either if you analysis what they do.

True, but they probably don't have a negative existence either.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. People not saying what they think out of 'respect', 'values' and 'decency', all of which are objective terms. The more we use this vacuous triad to muzzle ourselves, the more in danger we are of totally losing our perspective on reality.

Hmm.. in two minds about this.. yes she was an abysmal role model in life, but the one good thing about the whole Jade saga is that at least a few more ladies are likely to be getting their smears done.
I know my Mrs had been putting it off for months because it was uncomfortable and embarrasing, no matter how much I nagged her.
It took Jade popping her clogs for her to actually realise that it's there for a reason, and talking to the nurse who was doing it, she said there's been a significant rise in people having their smears following the news about Jade.

If people are learning from her situation, (and taking the steps to try and prevent the same thing happening to them), then whether she was a useless role model or not in life, it can only be a good thing, no ??

More girls getting cervical smears done is a good thing, yes. That doesn't make her a good role model, unless you're using her and her situation as a person not to be.

Recovering Alcoholic: You're an alcoholic.
Alcoholic: Your comments are empty and don't mean anything because you're an alcoholic too.

I like parkie but I suspect he's exploiting this for his own publicity.

Goody only died last week and her family are in mourning. Is this really a good time to come out and criticise her, or her role in society? Let her family grieve and take comfort from the public support, now is not the time to tell the that actually she is not worthy of it.
