Parkinson: 'Jade Goody was a wretched role model'

Ok. So, you agree with me that the media, Parkinson in this case, is acting devilishly while her family suffer during their grief.

If by "devilishly" you mean "exploiting the publicity", then yes, I agree with you that the media is exploiting the publicity of her personality and death. Again, that's what she signed up for: lots of money from the media in exchange for their right to exploit her private life and the private lives of her family.

But I don't include Parkinson in this, since he was never part of the Jade Goody media machine. So no, I don't believe that Parkinson is acting devilishly. He's just some old TV geezer giving us his personal opinion - and he's telling it like it is.

I see where you coming from, but it also seems like your trying to be awkward and hard work on purpose.

Its not like hes been going around picking up litter and feeding orphans etc for 50 years but hes been doing consistently well in the broadcasting industry for all that time. Just like anyone, he got Knighted for doing what he does and does it well consistently. Could you really see Jade Goody milking big brother for 50 years? (forget the fact shes dead lol)

I am not trying to be hard work. I just don't hold his broadcasting career in high esteem or regard it as some sort of incredible achievement that should be celebrated with a knighthood. It is a profession which has not helped anyone other than himself - perhaps apart from all the mindless drones who constantly need something to watch on TV or they melt into a pool of their own boredom & stupidity.

I doubt there will be many people coming out a week after he has popped his clogs saying the types of things he's said. No class, Wogan would never say such a thing.

Well, he's being paid for writing this article so it's not like some pub geezer. Everyone who has written anything, positive or negative, about her since her death is exploiting her, I just think the negative press should have waited a while.

What a BRAVE BRAVE man to say these things AFTER she died.
he did not have the guts to say it when she was alive because
she was more popular then him.

LOL! So you would have thought more of him saying it while she was in distress on her death bed  That would be nice for her wouldn't it!

Let's be frank though, he has a very good point... And at least he has the nerve to say it...

I haven't seen him criticizing/making crudely timed remarks about the dead recently though, which is what this thread is all about.

Nobody is immune to criticism, alive or dead. The reality is, Parkinson did speak a lot of sense. Jade Goody was hardly a role model, and the media's reverence for her absolutely does not make sense at all, considering the kind of person she was before she was diagnosed with cancer. You might not like that, but that's how it is. I think Parkinson chose to make his comments now while the whole thing's still fresh in everyone's minds; a sort of reminder 'whoa hey guys don't you think you're going a little too far with all this?' kind of thing.

I don't think it's right at all that a person who was racist, profoundly ignorant and generally juvenile gets compared many times to somebody like Princess Diana, and get the same amount of coverage and the same amount of reverence. If you can at least understand this point of view that a few of us are expressing here, that would go a long way into reducing your seemingly trolling posts here.

Er, no she wasn't. People were already bored with Jade by the time she went on her second BB series - and that one didn't bring her a lot of popularity, did it?

Parkinson has a career spanning 40 years in television. That's a hell of a lot more than Jade's 15 minutes of fame.

In his criticism of Jade, he also said: "I feel sorry for the poor girl. I think she was totally exploited from the moment she went on Big Brother".

That is not an unmigitated attack. If anything, it's extremely generous.

I think I will take this time to remind the naysayers that Parkinson served in the British army and participated in the Suez conflict. He wasn't just 'some useless tv presenter' as some would liken him to be.

Absolutely. It was a total turnaround on the part of the media, who greatly influenced the public. Let's not forget that the Sun once called her a "vile, pig-ignorant, racist bully", and was probably the most guilty of jumping on the platitude bandwagon when she was diagnosed.

Jade Goody did nothing - nothing - for this country and the sooner that people pull their heads out of the clouds and release that, the better we'll all be. It's a grave, ridiculous insult to compare her to Princess Diana.

For most people, Jade Goody will be remembered for two things only - being an idiot and for having cancer. I'm not trying to be difficult. I genuinely can't think of anything else to say about her.

I dont think anyone can really argue that Parky was right in what he said however the point is it didnt really need to be said.

She was a bad role model no doubt but at the same time the celebrity culture in this country is so screwed up that someone with her characteristics can become hugely famous and wealthy while having no noticable ability or talent.

No one can blame the girl for cashing in really? The blame lies with the members of the public who inexplicably bought the magazines, watched the tv shows and have elevated her to superstar status. Unfortunately we cant argue with this because if no-one bought into it it would have gone away.

I think the timing of Parkys remarks was a bit of a shame as well and i wouldnt mind knowing the context in which he felt the need to say those things whether they are right or not.
