Current thinking for 1st DSLR?

Canon 1000D not worthy of a mention?

yes, better value than most. only one which tops it is 450D, which is significantly more expensive with regards to the insignificant spec difference.

try the both the nikon and canon range and go from there.

Wow, just checked 1000D prices(not been looking recently) and theyre going for £340

I paid £290 back in December for mine, £30 cashback on top of that and another £10 topcashback. Prices really have gone crazy!

Another vote for the Sony, downside is lack of lenses, but the reviews it's gotten have been fantastic for the price

Guess I've been away from the scene for a while!
well, new you've got Sony's own branded range (which has filled out a bit with more to come & only a few exotics missing currently), Sigmas, Tamrons & minor brands plus also second hand Minolta/KM & other brands in MAF fit.

I am biased but would suggest Canon. My 350d has served me well.
Best option would be to think about what you are wanting to photograph and the likely types of lenses required. Then see which manufacturers fit the bill, especially with pricing.
One reason I chose Canon was their 100-400mm zoom as I do a lot of aircraft photography.

Whatever you get done forget to try the manual settings once you have got used to the camera!
I know of at least two slr owners who keep the settings on auto. Yes it works, but you will miss out on a lot of the flexibility slrs have.

As a beginner I just got the Sony A200. It was a choice between it, the Nikon D60, and the Canon 1000D and the Sony presented the best value imo.

I like close in black and white, lots of detail and unusual views of everyday objects. I can see me wanting a nice prime lens at some point, canon do an amazing 50mm iirc? The longer focal lengths are of limited interest to me to be honest.

Yeah a second hand 350d is one of the possibilities from the 'bay or a high street camera shop

Absolutely! I used to love my Olympus OM10 way back in the day, so am very happy with full manual, that's the main motivation, along with picture quality, for getting the dSLR.

Apparently Nikon are releasing a new entry level dslr on 14th april so Id hang on till then to see if anything arises.
Also dont be put off by the lack of in body lens motor on D40/D60, Nikon now have the 35mm AF-S prime with inlens motor (~£200 though).
I would also try holding the cameras in a camera shop, Nikon/Canon/Sony/Olympus etc all feel very different in the hand and you may be swayed towards one brand because of this.
