NEC LCD24WMGX3 Professional Gaming 24" Widescreen

I will also be ordering 2 of these soon I think,

however do you think OCuk would open them and test them before posting to make sure there are no problems/dead pixels as it sounds like a very common problem. I HATE chasing up faulty products!

cheeeeeers

Sorry to say soundboy but I emailed that question to OCUK and they said that they don't provide this service. I even offered to pay a fee, shame really as it would just make OCUK's customer service just that much better.

Ahh a shame really. Oh well i suppose if there was a problem I could return it to NEC and it sounds like they are willing to test replacements. There customer service does sound excellent.

sorry guys but these are 25 pages :) so i am wondering. this screen is it really that good? i am looking for a screen to hook up to my macbook pro and do web/graphics (not necessary print) and also video editing. is it worth the money? u can get 2 24" for cheaper money ok, tn panels but is it really worth it?
i want a screen which is nice and big and gives me good colors, but i am not a professional design studio so i wonder if it really needs to be a non tn screen. and i also would like to use my future screen for playing games, how good is it here?
thanks for the help :)

I ordered one of these Monday afternoon around 3pm and it arrived Tuesday morning at 11.30 :)

The box has been opened and re-sealed - I suspect to put the power lead in because everything else was sealed and clearly unused.

I haven`t gone looking for dead pixels but think there is one in the bottom left only noticeable on a light background.

Anyway I have to say I`m not that bowled over by the screen - I bought the 24" OcUK Value DGM VA panel off ebay a couple of weeks ago but realised that the DVI port is not hdcp compliant so I couldn`t connect my PS3 - the idea is to connect all my "sad" equipment in one place. Race Seat - wheel - PC and consoles.

I actuallly prefer the picture on the DGM panel and more critically find that it was better in racing games - the NEC seems to show a bit of movement problems ie watching a replay of other cars in rFactor they seem to jump a little. Tried messing with the various set-ups including Game 2 and through mode which supposedly reduces input lag to almost nothing. Also tried the various MP modes which then affect the brightness and colour balance.

I can`t quite find the right settings balance either - seems really bright which washes out the colours. If I turn down the brightness right down to 15/20 then it is necessary to put the contrast up to add a bit of punch to the colours but that again introduces too much brightness - might fiddle with the gamma (black level) setting.

I have tried the suggested hdmi setting earlier in this link and it did improve the picture a bit even though I am using DVI (for PC) & hdmi for PS3.

At the moment in terms of a PC monitor my £150 ebay purchase is shading this supposedly top of the line 24" model.

To be fair if I had not seen the DGM monitor then I would be very impressed with the NEC in isolation.

Perhaps I just need to find the right combination of settings of which there are admittedly a lot.

It is a quality product mind - great construction and good functionality.

Any tips very welcome in terms of settings to get the best out of this monitor.

Cheers

Thanks :) Let us know if you get any problems.

If you post in the customer support forum we can get your issue resolved quickly. We don't always look at every single post in these hardware threads because there is so many. If you post your problems in the CS forum, we can deal with them straight away.

Got mine today. I can also confirm that my box has been opened and re-sealed. Thankfully, all the rest looks reassuredly untouched. All leads are in their original plastic packaging and the taping seems original and untampered. Also the first lead on top of everything else was the UK 3 pin power plug which supports NEC's claims that boxes are opened to put this cable in :)

Upon taking the monitor out of the box briefly, I can tell i've been the first to do so as the protective shrouding has been creased only once and securely in place.

My psu doesn't arrive until tomorrow so i won't be able to test for dead pixels etc. *crosses fingers*... will report back with further findings soon though :)

Well I didn't get mine today as apparently the man from DPD can't ring a door bell. My brother was in all day and didn't hear a thing. So I am hoping that they do ring the doorbell tomorrow!!!

Virus2K made a post in the monitor review thing that has some settings you can try

Thanks I tried those settings and it improved it a bit. PC use is fine - not great but fine - not as good as the old Ocuk DGM monitor but close enough.

However, the PS3 via hdmi is dissapointing - the whole image looks washed out and lacking definition. It looks goood on the start up screen - nice sharp text but in games GT5P and Fifa 09 it looks washed out and smeary (?) - ghosts terribly and if I turn on MP mode the players then have a 2nd player image like a halo or ghost near them although the motion is then smoother. I have tried hdmi 1 & 2 just in case - same result.

I have set PS3 to hdmi palette to full and tried both PC and AV input options - slightly different appearance.

Somebody else mentioned earlier in the thread that it appeared low res and that is what it seems - to be fair I suspect it`s not native 1080p simply scaled from no more than 720p which might explain that.

It`s just so much better and smoother on my 42" plasma - I was hoping for a nice crispy punchy image from this screen for PS3.

I`ll have to test the 360 via hdmi and vga to see if it a PS3 issue.

I will keep fiddling with the setting but at the moment think I will request an RMA within the 7 days - I haven`t taken the protective film off and all the cables apart from the hdmi cable are still sealed.

Cheers

UPDATE

Finally got my psu... hooked everything up quickly and would you know it.. my oem vista messes up on me. Upon viewing the activation page.. i noticed one dead pixel off centre to the left... seems only visible against a white background. I can sort of live with this i think. Couldn't change the res or test any of my games or run pixel buddy i decided to move on to my bro's ps3.

Against the menu screen of the ps3 (black background).. i noticed a very very dead pixel off centre to the top.. the bit where you'd like at say the address bar to IE/Firefox. Not good.

To the right of this, there's another.. not as bright but it's there.

Lower down to the bottom left of the screen, again not as bright but it's there.

So without using any software, i've managed to spot 4 dead pixels... jeez.. just my luck :(

Not sure about the others, i did play killzone 2 for about 10 mins... gotta say though, it's a pretty decent screen. I'm no expert but i didn't see any ghosting. Compared to gaming on my bro's sony 40" lcd.. this is very very good indeed. You get a lot of motion blur on the sony.. whereas the NEC, i hardly noticed it and it was very easy on the eyes..

god... if it wasn't for these darn pixels.. i'd be having a whale of a time!

Anyway, going to post in the erm.. customer support bit?

Hope someone's on the other end of the phone at OC tomorrow...*sighs*

Going to have to get a replacement if i can.. if you get a pixel perfect screen... it's a lovely monitor :)

hey, managed to hook my laptop to this NEC montior :) Catalyst control working great with the auto adjustment feature of this monitor :)

Anyway, ran pixel buddy and i can see 8 dodgy pixels against the black background... other colours are just too harsh on the eyes.

Anyway, i've posted in the rma/customer services thread... hopefully someon will get back to me *sighs*.

Should i start taking pictures?? as i'm sure they won't just take my word for it right?

Also, other than the pixel situation... i still think it's a fab monitor :) Just the right size too for me :)

If you get no luck with Ocuk it would probably be worth calling NEC UK mate, they have given me and some others here really awesome customer service recently, can't recommend this course of action enough

They've sorted some out that OCUK wouldn't

08701 201160 for the UK number

After reading recommendations in this thread I brought myself the monitor, initially everything was fine but after a hour or so horizontal blue lines appeared randomly across the monitor... I checked the connections and everything was secured but the problem persisted, I also plugged my old monitor back in to check if the problem was the gfx card, but that was perfect. So i turned off the monitor for a few minutes then started it again and they were all gone. Just wanna get some advice, should I send it back or just hope it was a one off thing? Havent had anymore problems for a day or so.... thanks.

Hansolo,

Dont send the monitor back to OCUK
phone NEC tech Support.

if you explain to them the problems you have being 4+ dead pixels ect im sure they will replace it with a brand new model useing there awsome service they send you the replacment in advance then the next day they pick up the broken one. ;)

also tell them you want them to check for backlight bleed and dead pixels before the replacment model gets sent out to you ;)

they will do it and you will end up getting a awsome monitor though the post :D
