Grrr my virgin internet grinds to a halt every night, it takes over a minuate for anything to load. Did a speed test and it's 0.95 mb/s download and 0.06 mb/s upload....surley Virgin don't throttle that badly?

What sort of time does it die and where are you?

I don't notice any throttling here in bristol, have been on 10mbit about 6 months now.

So in other words you are a very heavy user... that'll be why then!

Lol, 10GB in a day is very heavy? Not at all, it's probably a lot more than the average but I've personally done a lot lot more than that several days in a row, albeit overnight, and never had such problems. Something isn't quite right.

It starts at 8 or 9pm you say, yet before that it's absolutely fine? What speed package are you on?

If it's Virgin ADSL I wouldn't be surprised as their ADSL service is quite shocking.

i've been having trouble with virgin broadband the past few days.

from about 8pm it can just cut off for no reason - and is also quite slow.

Depends on the time the OP was doing the downloading, so probably got hit by the STM rules if true.

Mind you my VM (cable) connection has been dodgy since the Easter holidays started with random disconnections from gaming servers and dropped connections from the cable modem. Might just be overloaded UBRs with all the kids and students being off on holiday?

I had a similar issue with VM before I left. It was the reason I left, actually.

It wasn't throttling with me. I had painfully slow connections that would periodically drop out, and I was getting substantial packet loss, timed out tracerts, all that guff.

Have you checked to see if you're getting packet loss?

It was the overloading of the local infrastructure that was causing it for me - or at least so was explained to me by a couple of tech guys. I was infuriated that they knew it was a problem, but refused to give any indication of when it would be fixed and one tech actually said they didn't consider it high priority!

It was generally ok in the daytime, but when people started logging on in the evening it just dropped to sub-dial-up speeds or dropped completely. I spoke to a tech who read out his list of high local loading and it coincided exactly with the times my connection was dropping.

The whole thing was a nightmare and I left VM because of it and because of their half-hearted manner of dealing with it.

Virgin is a poorly managed company - not making reasonable or pertinent investments - doomed by unspeakable management. Anyone getting good value is fortunate. In its various forms from birth ( in between going Chapter 11) it always appears to be taken over by cowboys out to turn a quick buck!

What kind of connections were you guys on? Currently considering going for them (if I want tv, have to go with them. sky aren't a option in this new place :() and is cheaper to get broadband and phone with them. But i hate some of their policies so still in two minds. Considering paying more to not be with them, depending on what I hear. Not really heard much positive from people on here, but do seem to be a lot of people with them still.

I hate the capping, but right now i'm on a 2mb, and quite happy. so if I get a 20mb, and they cap it to 7.5mb, still ok for me. I just really hate the idea of paying for a service, and getting 25% of it because I went over a limit of an "unlimited" service =/

We now get Virgin TV only and use Be* for broadband. I think it works out at £2.50pm more than we were paying for the 10Mb/s BB connection with Virgin. Well worth it imo, because Virgin's ISP service and their helpline was doing no favours for my blood pressure. And being able to actually use my connection freely in the daytime is such a revelation after years of avoiding traffic shaping that it almost feels like a whole new service!

I'm on the 20 Mb service and usually get full speed with no issues. The STM rules don't affect me much as I configure my download clients to schedule them outside the official hours. All the rules have done is made me change downloading from early evening to overnight.

Usually VM are very good although as I said lately with the holidays being on I've had a few problems with the connection. I'll probably wait until the kids go back to school next week before phoning their support line to see if things improve.
