Also, do you have a wireless router? Maybe someone is leaching off your connection. Best thing to do if you do have a wireless router is to either disable the wireless side of things, or if you use wireless, use mac address filtering.

i had a similar issue which turned out to be a local network issue and virgin took around a month to fix it :rolleyes:

that was just after the 50mbit service came out though. they claimed they were using a serperate network and 20mbit would be unefected but i call BS because at the time the newsgroups were full of people with similar problems to me

Been having the same problem last couple of days. On 10mb but speed test showing like 0.7mbit/s down 0.06 up. Virgin just collapses at peak time.

Could be a modem issue or like you say the network in your area might be overloaded. Best thing to do is phone Virgins tech support line, I'm sure they will be able to help sort out the problem.

Doesn't sound like throttling to me, can you post your modem upstream and downstream stats (power levels and SNR) ?

I've had 2 outages this week & both on my days off :mad:

Fortunately this doesn't cut me off as I use my neighbours wifi when I need to but obviously I limit myself to browsing & no gaming or downloading.

I've been with them since day one & think this last week has just double my outages, Bit gutted really as it has been Rock solid till now.
All else fails though & I go off out with my Acer One & go all Linux on the *******

BT throttle me every night at about 4.30pm to 11pm,but when i phone them its we dont do it its against the law,

Hehe stop using bitorrent, this country seems to be going backwards in terms of bandwith, I'm still waiting for 16Mbit dsl and there's BT throttling back :s

I get throttled if I get on the newsgroups between 6am-9pm. So I just download at off-peak times to get full speed all day.

Plus ensure you have encryption on WPA or WPA, (WEP is easily cracked)

I'm on the 20 MEG package and download at 18.67 Mbps as a constant. Just have to make sure that you dont go over the "allowance" that defines you as a heavy user during the monitoring times. If I need anyting large downloaded at night I set it in place after 9.

anyway it's not throttling but just congestion/contention on the network coming into play, i get it also after ~6pm and i don't see the full 20mbit again until ~11pm-12pm.

virgins network is massively oversubscribed which is why the STM is in place.
