E46 323. .

The autos are fine, they are good boxes on the whole, but they really aren't that interesting, actually quite frustrating when you really do just want to go out for a 'drive' ...great when stuck in rush-hour traffic though.

i dunno, i can have enough fun in mine, ok its no 2 seater manual car, but the kickdown is good enough and can keep it in a low gear for as long as needed.
like i said though, that is probably no more than 1 or 2% of someones driving :]

Yea, you're probably right really.

I always found that to keep mine on the boil and in the 'really good noise' zone with the auto, I would end up at license losing speeds rather too quickly ;P ...and there is just something about shifting gear that makes me feel much more engaged with the whole driving experience. All I can say is, after driving an auto for over 2 years I am finding a manual a breath of fresh air again. Still, as soon as I get stuck in barely moving traffic again I will be cursing I'm sure. They are good auto boxes though at least, and sports mode certainly can provide more fun, the steptronic manual mode is a bit rubish though in my opinion.

completely agree, its great to get back in a manual and feel like you are driving again hehe.
step is great for not changing up, but changing down its poo, better off using kickdown lol

I'm puzzled! - I really miss the steptronic function that my old e38 had (current e36 Auto has no such feature) and when I used to drive the e38 I'd always use the steptronic for changing as I found it changed up or down quicker than the "normal" Auto mode.

I don't think it was specific to the e38, my Dads mechanically identical e39 528i Auto's steptronic box behaves the same.

I find the step function only useful in one scenario, and that is dropping a cog in anticipation for an overtake. Kickdown takes a second or more to happen when you floor it, and if for example its a tight slightly iffy overtake past that old lady in the yaris on a busy a-road in traffic, i want to be bang down in 3rd with high rev's as the traffic on the other side is still clearing so that i can make the gap.

i use the step function in the e60, as it holds the revs at just under 3k regardless of what gear your in when accelerating, which is quite handy given the peak torque.

just flooring it would have it going all the way to 4 and a half which is unnecessary :p
