Need advice - housemates owe me money.

Ok. I don't see where the beginning of the contract was mentioned.

Anyway. Unless you already have a contract with them for the satellite etc then you would have no chance in a small claims court. The landlord wont get involved so you should probably negotiate diplomatically.

I know this situation anyway, it's fairly typical of flats with a majority of guys over girls. Eventually the girls end up hating the guys for being messy, not cleaning whatever. It's typically the guys who want to sign up for sky as well.

its a year contract, you cant cancel it without paying your way out.
you sign a contract to pay the bills for a set period of time for £xxx a month, so, you pay that money every month regardless of usage!

technically they didn't sign the contract - the OP did

the only thing they've signed is the agreement with the landlord presumably

IMO the fair thing to do is pay for what you use

We had a similar situation at uni whereby one guy stayed in the house over the summer and then wanted to split the quarterly electricity bill 4 ways when no one else had been there for 10 weeks. Given that he had a huge CRT monitor, computer, games consoles and even an electric heater (yes in summer) on the go all day it was quite a large bill - he got told in no uncertain terms to **** off and was made to pay the vast majority of it.

Ditto to broadband - we had a TV/internet package - the TV portion was a small part of the bill and one guy didn't have a computer - the electricity fiend wanted to just split the bill 4 ways even though one guy wasn't going to make use of the internet.

likwid, you've got me worried lol. I'm moving in with 3 lads and a girl in my second year of uni. We all get along really well so hope it doesn't turn out like that. I certainly won't start asking people to sign contracts, seems a little hostile between friends.

how do you pay for what you use when it comes to TV watching and broadband?

Not as hostile as falling out over money. Stick it down on a bit of paper, then none of you get lumped with owing the cash.

if they agreed on the contract when you all sorted it out, they should pay their part imo, although if i wasnt living there, i probably wouldnt want to pay for something i am not using.

by doing exactly that - paying for what you use

by not paying for broadband if you've not got a computer - you just watch TV so you just pay for your share of the "TV" portion of the bill - virign media does break it down on the bill not sure about sky

by not paying for either if you're not living there anymore due to having moved out

by paying yourself for anything extra - supposing one guy watches a porno and it gets added on the bill - do they all split the cost? of course they don't - they pay for what they use

supposing someone adds sky sports because he is a football fan & no one else is interests in football - do they split the extra cost of sky sports 6 ways? erm no - they pay for what they use

that's upto you. but if you are friends they shouldn't care. Most people who have lived in shared houses especially at uni have been screwed over for things like bills.

It's a 12month contract, everyone knew they would not be in the house for 12months and as such knew they would be paying whilst not there. It is standard in uni houses.

It depends on the the people really. If she's a girly girl then you'll have no chance. No matter how tidy you think you are it wont be enough. On the other hand if she's 'one of the lads' then it'll be ok. When there are more than a couple of people it's always a good idea to have some kind of agreement. There likely will be someone who is bad with money or lazy with cleaning for example so it's always good to speak to each other as a group as soon as something isn't right.

Should be a lot of fun whatever.

So the last week that I wasn't here I shouldnt pay?
What rubbish.
Grow up. We're talking about months not a week.

they havent moved out, they are still paying for the room, so we will ignore that pointless point of yours :p

umm, the additionals are easy. but virgin nor sky will say 'you watched 23 hours of tv, then someone else watched 5, but together 3 of you watched 56 hours'.
Broadband - how do you say 'you used 5gb this month, you pay £x' or whatever?

You are being silly.

You have 2 options, pay every month regardless of usage OR pay a set percentage of the months cost between the users.
2nd option is stupid because if no one uses it, who pays?

1 week is £125. More than is being argued about here. For arguments sake, out of the 3 months i am paying for I will use the place for about 5 weeks in total.
Should I only pay for those 5 weeks? thats a big saving for me, please, have a word with the woman I am paying :]

Ok. If it's a 12 months contract that the girls agreed to pay then they should pay up.

hardly - you're just extrapolating from my post and making silly assumptions - you're not billed on usage but the length of time you have the service

if all 6 people moved out to live at home with 6 months left then they could pay a cancellation fee, split it 6 ways and this would cost less than paying the rest of the 6 months

If two people have moved out then how can you justify charging them full whack for something that they won't even use - I'd just not charge them but if you were being picky then a reduced fee would be fair.

Flip it the other way - if it was in one of their names then they would be well within their rights to say they want to cancel the contract unless someone is able to get it transfered to their name.
