I still cant decide whether to get a SSD Vertex 30GB

Im still put off by people saying they decrease in performance over time.

It will only have Vista Home 64BIT on it and my applications, everything else like my pics, music and video converting will be on a usual hard drive.

So how long before I notice this drop in performance and what can be done about it?

Many thanks.

Tbh if you are putting Vista64 and Apps on then I would suggest a min of 60Gb needed as you'd be surprised how quickly 30Gb is chewed up.

Regarding performance drop over time this quote is from the OCZ forums: "There is a certain amount of controversy as to whether the decline in speeds noted in the benchmarks are noticeable in everyday use."

It has been suggested that Vertex users should keep aprox 20% of the drive as free space (hence also my comment above regarding getting 60Gb min) as there is also a theory that the drives speed suffers as it fills up, although there is also hot debate on this subject.

I'm afraid to say that as these drives are fairly new tech the questions regarding long-term usage are simply not answered yet - you only have to look at the number of different firmware revisions that are going on to see how fast this tech is developing.

According to all reports tho, if you do start to experience a slowdown then a complete erase and reload cures the issue. Not something you might want to consider, but Vertex owners are getting used to reloading as every time the firmware is flashed it clears the drive anyway - so keeping a decent image available is only sensible.

Have a look through the OCZ Forums here, there's loads of good stuff.

In the meantime, mine are running fine and I reckon it's the best upgrade I've done recently - they've made more improvement to my rig then extra RAM, faster CPU or better GPU could have done.

I bought a 120gb recently with my new system. Definitely worth the upgrade. Getting intot the operating system is fast and much more responsive. I have some games installed and they load much quicker. And there is no noise. What are you waiting for? :)

I just bought 2 Vertex 60GB and put them in RAID 0, the speed difference is amazing loading Vista Ultimate 64 in seconds, no more waiting for windows sidebar to load, I believe that Windows 7 due out later this year, early next will take full advantage of SSD's.
If you have the money GO FOR IT, one of the best upgrades I have made:D

I'd love to be able to upgrade to a couple of SSD's! Everything I read about them is just saying good things really!

If you can afford it, do it!

Personally I'm gonna wait until W7 for SSD's. Just because I know if I buy one now, round the corner when the next round of superfast SSD's are released, I'm gonna be wanting another :D

Im going for the 60GB one mate, will be RAID 0'ing in a month or 2 if all goes well :)

Good choice m8, I'm sure you won't regret it. And RAID 0 on these beauties is awesome as they scale brilliantly. When you can afford it another 60Gb would have you set.

I have 90Gb total and with Vista, Photoshop, Pinnacle Studio, Office, and several large games I'm using about 40Gb so far, so I reckon you'll be fine on the 60Gb but add another to it and you'll see performance fly! :)

Personally I think the tech still has a little maturing to go. Consider the velociraptors aren't THAT far behind in performance, offer more storage for the same price and don't require you to jump through as many hoops to get them performing well i'd let the early adopters get the kinks out first.

When you are talking about access speed - considering one of the generally agreed "tweaks" is to look at more memory and Ram drive - do the same with a GOOD modern drive and you are likely to take decent sized chunks out of the access speed these have for anything it really matters (do you REALLY care if the 4GB dvd image loads 3.5ms faster? The rest a ram disk buffer or even a good chunk of system ram to buffer a decent prefetch could handle pretty well).

Basically - I think the tech's wonderful and will drop a sizeable chunk of dollar on the first REALLY good drives out (watching how western go with theirs) but atm cash going on more mature tech (2 x velociraptors ordered).
