Israel stands ready to bomb Iran's nuclear sites

It is a huge risk for the IDF and they have been planning it for years. Iran knows this so has built an umbrella of defences the like of which Israel has never come across before and if they do attack it will mean losses like they have not experienced in many a year and still might not succeed. Their hope is that someone with a broader capability (the US or even the UK with volumes of cruise misslies) would do the job for them but as this looks more and more unlikely the clock is ticking and Israel will have little choice (in their mind) but to go for it.

Aren't Obama and Ahmadinejad best mates now? Can't see the US being too happy with it.
I don't see how Israel have the right to do this. They're taking the law into their own hands without international backing.

Only thing i have to say is good luck to Israel because they sure as hell are going to need it. But of course they have the Americans backing them so theres no doubt that they will win in the end:rolleyes:. But if they do get into a war with Iran then it wont be a quick war...it will be one that will go on for some time and there will be some serious casualities from both sides as Iran is no Iraq.

But do they really have the US backing them? I thought one of the reasons they attacked Gaza so suddenly was to get the job done before the new administration was in and avoid potential US criticism.

personally both iranian regime and israel regime are both nuts. and ordinary people suffer.

so sick about hearing how israel defends itself blah blah. it is the one that started all this by expanding and attacking the arab countries in the first place (6-days war in 67) and invaded Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt (which it had previously attacked with UK and France over the Suez canal a few years after WW2).

Anyway I am no fan of either country and they both need to relax.

If we stop Israel from having nukes, we may have a better chance at calming down Iran of wanting to have them.

Anyway i hope the Obama administration will chill out the Israel far right gov, last thing we need is more bloodshed in that region on more BS allegations of weapons of mass destruction. Violence begets violence. At the end of the day you can't kick out the Palestinians or the Israeli's, they will have to learn to live together, that is the only real solution, in the meantime, we need to stop these BS pre-emptive strikes and allow the mending to take its' time. Hopefully future generations will have cooled down, as we have in Europe - so it's not impossible even after attrocities.

Funny man, nothing to contribute, so you try and insult me instead.
Grow up.
You know the news source is a "good one" and you have nothing to say against this.

Ever heard of the USS Liberty? IDF have had difficulties with identifying US ships in the past.

No isreal will play the "woop your ass with superior fire power" card it took them 6 days to wipe out all of their attackers the last time they where attacked.

Iran wouldn't dare attack them or it would probably be the 6 hour war this time.

what revisionist history classes did you go to??

Israel attacked first (with Uk and France backing) in 1956 and took over the sinai - the real aim being control of the Suez canal. later Egypt trying to regain the Sinai, was amassing troops at the border. This led to Israeli pre-emptive air strike into Egypt and that started the 6 day war in 1967, the arabs united and retaliated in 1973 in the Yom Kippur war and got their butts kicked by Israel again ;).

Anyway what is done is done. we need to stop anymore strikes from any sides, or then we retaliate like we did in Kuwait. but please no sequels to Iraq

PS all this pre-emptive arguments remind me of Minority Report - I for one wouldn't want to live in that kind of world.

We're the sane ones who aren't threatening to wipe another country off the map with it in the name of Allah.

That's a pretty damn good qualification.

threatening is the operative word. Its grandstanding. Iran will not do it, why would they?? If they did, they would be obliterated via Nuclear attack. Why cant people get some sense behind this.
The profileration of Nukes is the real issue.

god lord have you read the comments on that telegraph article?

Change may have come to some of america.. not to all of it by a long way!

Its also worth considering who is the current, actual nuclear power out of Iran and Israel... Israel aren't really doing much to show they are moderate either.

I don't pretend to know what its like to live out there on either side, what i do know though is the international community ought to be doing a lot more to stand inbetween these different viewpoints before it sucks everyone into yet another armed conflict.

''Wiped off the Map' – The Rumor of the Century'

'So what did Ahmadinejad actually say? To quote his exact words in Farsi:

"Imam ghoft een rezhim-e ishghalgar-e qods bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad."

That passage will mean nothing to most people, but one word might ring a bell: rezhim-e. It is the word "regime." pronounced just like the English word with an extra "eh" sound at the end. Ahmadinejad did not refer to Israel the country or Israel the land mass, but the Israeli regime. This is a vastly significant distinction, as one cannot wipe a regime off the map. Ahmadinejad does not even refer to Israel by name, he instead uses the specific phrase "rezhim-e ishghalgar-e qods" (regime occupying Jerusalem).

So this raises the question.. what exactly did he want "wiped from the map"? The answer is: nothing. That's because the word "map" was never used. The Persian word for map, "nagsheh" is not contained anywhere in his original Farsi quote, or, for that matter, anywhere in his entire speech. Nor was the western phrase "wipe out" ever said. Yet we are led to believe that Iran's president threatened to "wipe Israel off the map." despite never having uttered the words "map." "wipe out" or even "Israel."'

http://www.antiwar.com/orig/norouzi.php?articleid=11025

'Many news sources repeated the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) statement that Ahmadinejad had demanded that "Israel must be wiped off the map",[5][6] an English idiom which means to "cause a place to stop existing",[7] or to "obliterate totally",[8] or "destroy completely".[9]

Ahmadinejad's phrase was " بايد از صفحه روزگار محو شود " according to the text published on the President's Office's website, and was a quote of Ayatollah Khomeini.[10]

According to Juan Cole, a University of Michigan Professor of Modern Middle East and South Asian History, Ahmadinejad's statement should be translated as:

The Imam said that this regime occupying Jerusalem (een rezhim-e eshghalgar-e qods) must [vanish from] the page of time (bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad).[11]

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) translates the phrase similarly, as "be eliminated from the pages of history."[12]

According to Cole, "Ahmadinejad did not say he was going to 'wipe Israel off the map' because no such idiom exists in Persian". Instead, "He did say he hoped its regime, i.e., a Jewish-Zionist state occupying Jerusalem, would collapse."[13]'
